"The first phase was when we played the 100 Club, the Royal College of Art, the ICA and the Lacey Lady, all with the Clash and with no one there. That was with the Clash there, in London, and there was literally no one there. Then we stopped for a bit that winter, rehearsed loads, wrote loads of songs, did Harlesden, and then stripped it down more for the White Riot tour. Before the UK dates for that, we started off going over to France..." Rob Symmons [Subway Sect] interviewed in 1999;

New Year's Day '77. Broadcast 01 January 2015, BBC Four. Built around the earliest, until now unseen, footage of the Clash in concert, filmed by Julien Temple as they opened the infamous Roxy club in a dilapidated Covent Garden on January 1st 1977, this show takes us on a time-travelling trip back to that strange planet that was Great Britain in the late 1970s and the moment when punk emerged into the mainstream consciousness. There was supposed to be a lot but they all got cancelled. We did about three - there was Rouen and another place in the outskirts of France. We played this cinema in Paris, which was supposed to be this famous place where Johnny Halliday played, and the Rolling Stones in about 1963. It was all seated with lots of older people there, so that was quite strange."Around 500 people there." Rob Symmons [Subway Sect] interviewed in 1999:

This is the first night of The White Riot Tour which would establish the band nationally alongside the Pistols as THE major bands of the punk movement. It was almost certainly Topper's first major gig and was also a tour which would lose £28,000 due to smashed seats, a huge retinue of hangers on and general excess.
With the release of White Riot and The Clash album plus all the media coverage (both music press and national), the band were now met with packed audiences eager to experience the new punk phenomena. This transition from playing small clubs with largely disinterested audiences happened so quickly that Joe starts this gig with a totally superfluous for those who don't know we're The Clash"

With the bands growing aclaim and reputation several dates were arranged across northern Europe building on the bands success in France back in April starting with a trip to Sweden to Grona Lund.
The band returned from Sweden to the UK to play the cancelled Punk Festival in Birmingham as punks notoriety spread before heading back out for a full tour of the continent including TV appearances in France and Germany.
The Tour kicked off with the band headlining the second Mont de Marsen Punk Festival in France.

On returning from Europe, the band turned its attentions to another lengthy UK Tour beginning with a chaotic and cancelled visit to Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The Clash were still suffering the full backlash of punks bad reputation, including The Clash who had received front page headlines for the riot at teh Rainbow back in May on the White Riot Tour.
Several dates on the rebeliously entitled 'Get Out of Control Tour' had to be cancelled or re-arranged. Out of the original 21 dates/venues, 19 were advertised as having 'no seating'.

Dec | Jamaica, Give Em Enough Rope demos | |
Joe and guitarist Mick Jones were sent to Jamaica for two weeks in December 1977 to write songs for their upcoming second album. "I remember going to Jamaica with Mick for maybe a week or 10 days and we came up with some tunes …," Strummer recalled in The Clash, "but mostly I remember searching for Lee Perry in Kingston.
