The California Ballroom, also known as "Cali" and "Soul City," was a prominent music venue located in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, UK. It operated from 1960 to 1979 and was one of the United Kingdom's most renowned soul music venues outside London.
The venue had a capacity of 2000 and hosted a wide range of artists, including soul acts like Stevie Wonder, Ike & Tina Turner, and rock bands such as The Rolling Stones, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Clash, and The Damned . The California Ballroom was a significant hub for the local music scene, attracting audiences from various parts of the world and leaving a lasting impact on Dunstable's music culture.
The building's construction and architectural style are not explicitly mentioned in the provided search results. However, it is noted that the California Ballroom was the largest entertainment venue in the South East of England during its operation, indicating its historical significance in the region.
As for the current status of the building, the search results do not provide specific information about whether the California Ballroom still exists. The available information mainly focuses on the venue's historical importance and its impact on the music scene during the 1960s and 1970s.
The tour was a historic moment in punk history, marking the beginning of their time with CBS and the integration of a new band member, Topper Headon, on the drums. The building, constructed by architect Dunstable, is of a particular style, but the specific details about the architect and style are not available in the search results. As for the current status of the building, it is not explicitly mentioned whether it still exists.

Comments from those who went
The Clash appeared at The Cali May 30th 1977 with Subway Sect, The Slits and The Prefects. It was the last night of the 'White Riot Tour'... Two arrests were made and almost a near riot!
Admin was £2 with DJ Paul Gray. Paul remembers that night; "I had just got a pair of joke glasses with windscreen wipers on them.
Topper Headon thought they were the best things he'd ever seen and asked if he could borrow them..That's the last time I saw them"

Celia Barlow - haha first time I felt old. Paul Clifford borrowed his Dad's merc and drove us up there. Felt really grown up. During the gig realised that I WAS grown up - most people in the room were not just younger - they were so much younger they were SMALLER Great ig though.
Sue Grafflin - Loved it! Was there, and went to the pool bar after gig, met the slits, Ariup was certainly a huge presence, loud with a great sense of humour, she filled the room. Joe and Paul were the same, Joe was very chatty, also had a huge presence
Bren Brennan - fantastic night loved subway sect
Peter Maisey - what a night was it really 1977?
