An interview with Joe when the played Malmö in October 1977 and a review of the gig.

LITIK AR DYNGA"
NR 10 NOVEMBER 1977 | The Power of Music | 7 ”POLITICS IS RUBBISH”
Bengt Eriksson: — But there have been times when things were handled. They didn't make any difference either, those who sat there a long time and said what they said in that statement.
Joe Strummer: — The one who knows, knows...
Bengt Eriksson: — Don't you think you can group it then?
Joe Strummer: — Not through fighting and demonstrations. I think that only makes it worse.
Bengt Eriksson: — But you mean it should be handled in other ways?
Joe Strummer: — I usually try to talk to it, and make it realize how wrong it is. Can't one do more than that?
■ FASCIST MUSIC
Bengt Eriksson: — But in England and Sweden , there are some who claim that punk is fascist music...
Joe Strummer: — It depends on the reaction. And that can exist because the kids don't want to know about any prejudices in the school they went to. And what about the older generation that watches? Well, you remind them of Hitler ...
Bengt Eriksson: — How do you explain Nazism in England ?
Joe Strummer: — The young Black person—the one born in England —wants nothing to do with white England . Their music? They pick up prejudices as best they can. But the young person is only interested in their own Black culture. It becomes rebels—"soul rebels"—who don't fit in.
Bengt Eriksson: — Perhaps there are entire neighborhoods where only Black people live. And where a few young people fight over such a thing, it's not so damn strange. They need money. Yes. They can't get a job and have to steal to get money. But for every week, those who grow up become worse.
Bengt Eriksson: — What about the young white workers then? They don't have any jobs either...
Joe Strummer: — Yes, it's claimed that "punks" and "dreads" in London are approaching each other. Reggae bands have, for example, started playing at white clubs. But I am skeptical. I have been to relevant concerts where the audience was there because I was white. There have only been leisure-punks from what I've seen in Hackney .
■ CONTRADICTIONS
Bengt Eriksson: — What do strong contradictions between white musicians and immigrant-colored India say...
Joe Strummer: — Are the reactionaries sleeping? With a life that does that, they are very good at running supermarkets. Every street in every center in every city has a commercial supermarket. And if you are white and don't have a job and no cash, you go there and steal what you need. You don't grill the one you steal from—and they don't grill you.
Bengt Eriksson: — The music comes out of unemployment; can you spit out a previous lack of opinion? But do you entertain yourself much?
Joe Strummer: — The only thing since I left school eight years ago. That song, I've had a job for about five months. I've taken any jobs. Dishwasher, theater machinery...
Bengt Eriksson: — What do you think about the future? Will you end up like Sid Vicious with a nose full of girls in hotel rooms?
Joe Strummer: — I would think so... Anyway. It will end like Johnny Rotten . He sells "old truths," "moralities."
The hungry wolves in a country—which doesn't bring forth any with truths ( David Bowie , Bryan Ferry , Paul Simon , Lou Reed , Mick Jagger , Crosby , Nash , Stills and Young , Dylan , Queen ).
In this picture, you see The Clash when they played at Dad’s Dance Hall in Malmö .
I still think that their first LP is the best album an English punk band has made—100% music, melodies, and lyrics. A clearly political album.
But live at Dad’s , it wasn't great. Noise-ita (as a Clash listener) and Mick Jones were pointed out as simply not being able to keep the beat. Someone wasn't there and the melodies disappeared into the noise.
One has also seen English punk bands in London —who play like an alarm, just the truth, without noise (those who are playing right now are the last thing they will ever do—then The Clash weren't particularly energetic either.*
And it seems just as ridiculous once you've peeled away this punk dream. But in Sweden , it hasn't taken hold much because it doesn't show up in Dada .
Yet the punk bands always get an audience in Sweden . One can wonder about that. But I think I am more surprised that in Sweden , there isn't even any rock that can give the punk audience what punk gives them.
England is just this Sweden —and vice versa.

— Hur vill du förklara nazismen i England ?
Men du själv själv underhålla mycket?
Disk-brare, teatermaskineri...

CLASH : AT DAD'S DANCEHALL , MALMÖ 7/10-77
The "famous" Lund group New Bondage was the first opening act. And they really fired up the crowd, largely because the singer and guitarist Henrik Hwargård came out with nothing on his upper body and black Lou Reed glasses, a huge contrast. They ran through their songs with wonderful energy and feeling. They played, among others, their upcoming single " Shocked & Defeated ", their own " Got No Job ", and Wayne County's " Cream In My Jeans ". This was probably the breakthrough for New Bondage . Now they can be counted as one of the best punk groups in Skåne , if not the best.
The Malmö group Problem was the next band. They didn't have a particularly successful evening even though they got to borrow the Englishmen's equipment. Only the song " Jag Vill Inte Ha " ( I Don't Want ) went over well.
After a half-hour wait, Strummer and Co. came onto the stage and immediately kicked off with " London's Burning ". It is a tremendous feeling to see and hear Strummer scream: "London's burning with boredom now/London's burning dial 999" . After this song, the little Johnny Rotten -copy Nicky Headon hammered out " 1977 ". Paul Simenon rumbles with his bass, and Mick Jones is a damn good guitarist, but he hardly gets to show it at concerts; however, he showed it during the soundcheck. There, he did some wonderfully beautiful solos and got lovely tones out of his guitar. After " 1977 " followed a lot of songs in quick succession. Including the rebellious " Hate & War " and the new single " Complete Control ", which is a lovely mix of punk and reggae. A direction that The Clash will likely show on their next LP, which should come out sometime early next year. They also played " Remote Control ", " Janie Jones ", " 48 Hours ", and a lot of other songs from the LP.
LITTLE NICKY HEADON, WHOM YOU RARELY SEE IN PHOTOS
After 50 minutes of wonderfully beautiful music, the concert was over. But by then, they had managed the encores " White Riot " and " 1977 " (one more time). The Clash are without a doubt the pillars of punk along with the Sex Pistols and perhaps some other group; they proved that this evening.

...INTERVIEW WITH THE CLASH AFTER THE SOUNDCHECK... /

First of the local support bands was New Bondage from Lund who got the crowd with them, they played their own song plus Wayne County's "Cream In My Jeans".
Next band was Problem from Malmö, they didn't do so well. Had borrowed some equipment from The Clash.
The Clash gets a top review, there's no "new" info in the review except that Topper is called a Johnny Rotten look a like!

Dom spelade bl.a. sin kommande singel " Shocked & Defeated ", deras egen " Got No Job " och Wayne County's " Cream In lly Jeans ".

NONCHA ALLT : Men Ramones då?
