Quality

speed and ageing problems...

Another excellent fast and furious performance but not quite as a good a recording (or performance) as Zurich a week earlier.

Joe tells the audience before the encore that "we're all sick in the band, do you understand" as the reason for what the band obviously considered a below par performance. However the recording shows little evidence of this with the band still blasting through the set in their inimitable style.

This good, fairly low generation recording is of almost all the gig; there are a few small edits.

The sound is enjoyable with a good degree of clarity though it does have some speed and ageing problems with some spots of wear as well. There is some distortion throughout which may well be from the over amped equipment rather than the limitations of the recording equipment.

Vocals are good but somewhat distant, Mick's suffers particularly. Drums not bad, almost no bass but good guitars.

Swedish Radio

When I asked an old Clashist friend and journalist on SR ( Swedish Radio ) what had to be done to get all those shows ( Malmö, Lund, Örebro '77, Eriksdal '80, Stockholm and Gothenburgh '81 and '84, they have them all - complete with perfect sound!)

I got the answer that if a show is asked for by more than 1000 people they'll put it on the list for P3 Live, a live show every night at 21.00. (Have a look att www.sr.se and go to P3 Live and see the program and old shows.) Unfortunately it's only 1 hour and therefore edited.

Background

First visit to Malmö, Sweden,

This was the the Clash's first visit to Malmö, Sweden, as part of their European tour in 1977 as part of their efforts to expand their audience and influence beyond the UK.

Malmö was a hub for punk and new wave music, with Dad's Dancehall being a notable venue for these genres. The city was undergoing economic and cultural changes, and the punk movement was a significant part of the youth culture

The Clash's visit to Malmö was part of a larger trend of British and American punk bands touring Europe to spread their music and message.

The Clash's music, with its rebellious tone and socially conscious lyrics, appealed to the youth in Malmö and other parts of Sweden.

Venue

Malmo - Dads

Dad's Dancehall, located at Föreningsgatan 54 in Malmö, was a significant venue for Punk and New Wave bands during a brief period in the late 1970s. Specifically, from 1977 to 1978, it was considered Sweden's best concert venue for these genres.

The Clash, an English rock band formed in 1976 and key players in the original wave of British punk rock., performed there as part of their "Get Out of Control Tour.

The Gig

"A terrific White Riot"

The recording fades in after the opening bars of London's Burning. All the performances are good but not exceptional. A very good Police & Thieves fades out during Mick's solo but fades back in almost immediately only losing a few seconds.

I'm So Bored With The USA is a highlight with different verses: "Yankee television in your living room, know all about " rest is hard to decipher but the taste of cola gets a mention.

What's My Name gets some different words too and the band now blast through to Garageland. At the start of the encore Joe explains that the band are sick and then there's a gap before he says, "we're waiting for Mick Jones to do his hair" An early indication of the problem that would later cause the band's break-up.

The Clash, sick or not put in a terrific White Riot (or White Christmas as Joe intro's it), which goes immediately into the second 1977.

English Translation

No Action : Twelve Months of Punk, New Wave, and Ecstasy at Dad's Dancehall in Malmö . The book documents performances by artists such as The Jam , The Clash , Ultravox , Runaways , Boomtown Rats , Patti Smith - Tom Robinson Band , Elvis Costello and the Attractions , Dr. Feelgood, and Ramones .

Magnus Gertten from Sydsvenskan describes the experience: "It is definitely not beautiful. But decidedly a fascinating experience for both ears and eyes" .

The Clash on Tour

Roadent ( Steve Connolly ) rigs The Clash's drum set at Dad's . Accompanying The Clash on their European Tour are the roadie Roadent and the producer/sound engineer Mickey Foote , from whom Björn Söderqvist obtained autographs. Much of The Clash’s merchandise sales were managed from the address 31 Albany Street in the Camden district of London . Joe Strummer lived there for a while. Roadent had a good handle on Scandinavia after having been the tour manager for the Sex Pistols during the summer.

The Clash’s tour plan included locations such as Paradiso in Amsterdam , Paris , Zurich , Vienna , Munich , Frankfurt , and Hamburg . In Sweden , they played in Malmö , but Örebro "became a bit too difficult". The United Kingdom tour included Belfast , Dublin , Newcastle , Glasgow Apollo , Edinburgh , Leeds University , Manchester Apollo , and Birmingham .

Reviews and Voices

Reviews were mixed. Under the headline "Sweatily beautiful with Clash in Malmö," it was stated that "Really good rock music should be played fast and with a lot of outward power" . The Clash transformed Dad's Dancehall into a "sweaty, swaying sea of people" .

Kvällsposten (October 9, 1977) was more critical under the headline "Disappointment - Punk Rock Without Life" . The reviewer argued that "Clash is only a surface" and that they were "art school graduates with a sense for image" rather than having roots in the street. The music was described as a "flirtation with the new generation's aggressive expression" without life or cultural foundation.

Joe Strummer explained the band's philosophy to Lennart Persson at Arbetet : "The music we play is an attempt to wake people up, to free them from the passivating music that superstars like Yes , Eagles , and Rod Stewart stand for. It’s just escapism" .

Inledning och Omslag

No Action : Tolv månader av punk, new wave och extas på Dad's Dancehall i Malmö . Boken dokumenterar spelningar med artister som The Jam , The Clash , Ultravox , Runaways , Boomtown Rats , Patti Smith - Tom Robinson Band , Elvis Costello and the Attractions , Dr. Feelgood och Ramones .

The Clash på Turné

Roadent ( Steve Connolly ) riggar The Clashs trumset på Dad's .

LITIK AR DYNGA"

NR 10 NOVEMBER 1977 | The Power of Music | 7 ”POLITICS IS RUBBISH”

Bengt Eriksson: — But there have been times when things were handled. They didn't make any difference either, those who sat there a long time and said what they said in that statement.

Joe Strummer: — The one who knows, knows...

Bengt Eriksson: — Don't you think you can group it then?

Joe Strummer: — Not through fighting and demonstrations. I think that only makes it worse.

Bengt Eriksson: — But you mean it should be handled in other ways?

Joe Strummer: — I usually try to talk to it, and make it realize how wrong it is. Can't one do more than that?

FASCIST MUSIC

Bengt Eriksson: — But in England and Sweden , there are some who claim that punk is fascist music...

Joe Strummer: — It depends on the reaction. And that can exist because the kids don't want to know about any prejudices in the school they went to. And what about the older generation that watches? Well, you remind them of Hitler ...

Bengt Eriksson: — How do you explain Nazism in England ?

Joe Strummer: — The young Black person—the one born in England —wants nothing to do with white England . Their music? They pick up prejudices as best they can. But the young person is only interested in their own Black culture. It becomes rebels—"soul rebels"—who don't fit in.

Bengt Eriksson: — Perhaps there are entire neighborhoods where only Black people live. And where a few young people fight over such a thing, it's not so damn strange. They need money. Yes. They can't get a job and have to steal to get money. But for every week, those who grow up become worse.

Bengt Eriksson: — What about the young white workers then? They don't have any jobs either...

Joe Strummer: — Yes, it's claimed that "punks" and "dreads" in London are approaching each other. Reggae bands have, for example, started playing at white clubs. But I am skeptical. I have been to relevant concerts where the audience was there because I was white. There have only been leisure-punks from what I've seen in Hackney .

CONTRADICTIONS

Bengt Eriksson: — What do strong contradictions between white musicians and immigrant-colored India say...

Joe Strummer: — Are the reactionaries sleeping? With a life that does that, they are very good at running supermarkets. Every street in every center in every city has a commercial supermarket. And if you are white and don't have a job and no cash, you go there and steal what you need. You don't grill the one you steal from—and they don't grill you.

Bengt Eriksson: — The music comes out of unemployment; can you spit out a previous lack of opinion? But do you entertain yourself much?

Joe Strummer: — The only thing since I left school eight years ago. That song, I've had a job for about five months. I've taken any jobs. Dishwasher, theater machinery...

Bengt Eriksson: — What do you think about the future? Will you end up like Sid Vicious with a nose full of girls in hotel rooms?

Joe Strummer: — I would think so... Anyway. It will end like Johnny Rotten . He sells "old truths," "moralities."

The hungry wolves in a country—which doesn't bring forth any with truths ( David Bowie , Bryan Ferry , Paul Simon , Lou Reed , Mick Jagger , Crosby , Nash , Stills and Young , Dylan , Queen ).

In this picture, you see The Clash when they played at Dad’s Dance Hall in Malmö .

I still think that their first LP is the best album an English punk band has made—100% music, melodies, and lyrics. A clearly political album.

But live at Dad’s , it wasn't great. Noise-ita (as a Clash listener) and Mick Jones were pointed out as simply not being able to keep the beat. Someone wasn't there and the melodies disappeared into the noise.

One has also seen English punk bands in London —who play like an alarm, just the truth, without noise (those who are playing right now are the last thing they will ever do—then The Clash weren't particularly energetic either.*

And it seems just as ridiculous once you've peeled away this punk dream. But in Sweden , it hasn't taken hold much because it doesn't show up in Dada .

Yet the punk bands always get an audience in Sweden . One can wonder about that. But I think I am more surprised that in Sweden , there isn't even any rock that can give the punk audience what punk gives them.

England is just this Sweden —and vice versa.

Hur vill du förklara nazismen i England ?

Men du själv själv underhålla mycket?

Disk-brare, teatermaskineri...

INTERVJU: BENGT ERIKSSON — MATS ZETTERBERG FOTO: MATS BACKER — THORE ANDERSSON

CLASH : AT DAD'S DANCEHALL , MALMÖ 7/10-77

The "famous" Lund group New Bondage was the first opening act. And they really fired up the crowd, largely because the singer and guitarist Henrik Hwargård came out with nothing on his upper body and black Lou Reed glasses, a huge contrast. They ran through their songs with wonderful energy and feeling. They played, among others, their upcoming single " Shocked & Defeated ", their own " Got No Job ", and Wayne County's " Cream In My Jeans ". This was probably the breakthrough for New Bondage . Now they can be counted as one of the best punk groups in Skåne , if not the best.

The Malmö group Problem was the next band. They didn't have a particularly successful evening even though they got to borrow the Englishmen's equipment. Only the song " Jag Vill Inte Ha " ( I Don't Want ) went over well.

After a half-hour wait, Strummer and Co. came onto the stage and immediately kicked off with " London's Burning ". It is a tremendous feeling to see and hear Strummer scream: "London's burning with boredom now/London's burning dial 999" . After this song, the little Johnny Rotten -copy Nicky Headon hammered out " 1977 ". Paul Simenon rumbles with his bass, and Mick Jones is a damn good guitarist, but he hardly gets to show it at concerts; however, he showed it during the soundcheck. There, he did some wonderfully beautiful solos and got lovely tones out of his guitar. After " 1977 " followed a lot of songs in quick succession. Including the rebellious " Hate & War " and the new single " Complete Control ", which is a lovely mix of punk and reggae. A direction that The Clash will likely show on their next LP, which should come out sometime early next year. They also played " Remote Control ", " Janie Jones ", " 48 Hours ", and a lot of other songs from the LP.

LITTLE NICKY HEADON, WHOM YOU RARELY SEE IN PHOTOS

After 50 minutes of wonderfully beautiful music, the concert was over. But by then, they had managed the encores " White Riot " and " 1977 " (one more time). The Clash are without a doubt the pillars of punk along with the Sex Pistols and perhaps some other group; they proved that this evening.

MICK JONES : Yes, it was in Hamburg . There were about 1000 people who saw us. NONCHA ALLT : Was there any energy (pressure) there? MICK JONES : Yes, actually . NONCHA ALLT : Were there any punks there? MICK JONES : Yes, there were a few, but the main thing isn't being a punk, it's that you like the music . NONCHA ALLT : True, but in Germany they mostly listen to electronic music, like Kraftwerk . PAUL SIMENON : I don't know, I don't listen to that stuff . NONCHA ALLT : What do you think of the other punk bands in England ? PAUL SIMENON : Half of them are just crap, but there are some good groups, such as Glen Matlock's Rich Kids . NONCHA ALLT : Do you believe this talk that Glen Matlock wrote the Sex Pistols' songs and that they are nothing without him?

PAUL SIMENON DURING THE INTERVIEW.. PHOTO ARTCHIE

PAUL SIMENON : I don't know, I don't play in the Sex Pistols . NONCHA ALLT : Have you heard many of these new bands? PAUL SIMENON : Nah, we, or rather I, don't go out much in London . MICK JONES : If there are people who like these bands, let them do it, as long as they're having fun . NONCHA ALLT : What do you think of the American bands, e.g., Heartbreakers and Wayne County ? JOE STRUMMER : I've seen them, but I don't like them . NONCHA ALLT : But the Ramones then? JOE STRUMMER : Yes, they are damn good, and the Patti Smith Group too .

Summary

This 1977 fanzine review details The Clash performing at Dad's Dancehall in Malmö , featuring an interview with Joe Strummer , Mick Jones , and Paul Simenon regarding their tour and musical influences.

Entry: Artchie and Binkie , Noncha Allt , October 1977, Pages 6-7, Clash: At Dad's Dancehall, Malmö 7/10-77 .

...just to have a whole LP with the Pistols , wonderful! The record sleeve is just folded, not glued—held together with a safety pin—just as it should be. Binkie and I have come across ten copies of this LP, so you can buy it from us for 40 bucks plus postage. But this only applies to those of you who subscribe; in other words, become a subscriber pronto. You know the addresses. ARTCHIE

The Clash are without a doubt the pillars of punk along with the Sex Pistols and perhaps some other group; they proved that this evening.

...INTERVIEW WITH THE CLASH AFTER THE SOUNDCHECK... /

> original fanzine in Swedish
> translated into English version

First of the local support bands was New Bondage from Lund who got the crowd with them, they played their own song plus Wayne County's "Cream In My Jeans".

Next band was Problem from Malmö, they didn't do so well. Had borrowed some equipment from The Clash.

The Clash gets a top review, there's no "new" info in the review except that Topper is called a Johnny Rotten look a like!

The interview with the Clash after soundcheck

Joe - They said that the Jam had a succes when they played here
Paul - We have to play better then...

Noncha Allt - Have you heard what happened to the Stranglers when they played here?
Joe - Oh yeah...

Noncha Allt - Where are you going to play tomorrow?
Paul - Some place called Ronneby

Noncha Allt - It was there The Jam got eggs thrown at them...where did you played yesterday?

Paul - I don't remember, do you Mick?
Mick - It was in Hamburg around 1000 people in the audience

Noncha Allt- Was it good?
Mick - Yeah, really

Noncha Allt - Was there any punks there?
Mick - A few but the main thing is that you're into the music not that you are a punk

Noncha Allt - I mean that in Germany everyone seems to listen to electronic music like Kraftwerk
Paul - I don't know I don't listen to that kind of music

Noncha Allt - What do you think about the other punkbands from England?
Paul - Half of them a shit but there are a few good ones like Glen Matlock's Rich Kids

Noncha Allt - Have you heared the romour that Glen wrote all Sex Pistols songs and without him they can't do anything
Paul - I don't know as I don't play for the Pistols

Noncha Allt - Have you heard any new bands?
Paul - No, I don't go out much in London
Mick - If people like these new bands let them do it as long they have fun

Noncha Allt - What do you think of these American bands like The Heartbreakers and Wayne County?
Joe - I've seen them but I don't like them

Noncha Allt - What about the Ramones?
Joe - They are brilliant, Patti Smith Group as well

Dom spelade bl.a. sin kommande singel " Shocked & Defeated ", deras egen " Got No Job " och Wayne County's " Cream In lly Jeans ".

ANARCHY & BITCH

JOE STRUMMER : PAUL SIMENON : NONCHA ALLT : Dom säger att The Jam gjorde succé här förra gången.

PAUL SIMENON UNDER JINTERVJUN.. FOTO ARTCHISE

NONCHA ALLT : Men Ramones då?
