Background

Pop culture, Kulture Wien 25 06 2012

On October 2, 1977, the British punk rock band "The Clash" ("Should I Stay or Should I Go") - incidentally Mayor Häupl's favorite band - made a guest appearance in the hall.

The Gig

Better to turn the power back on

Martin Helmreich

The first "real" punk concert in Vienna (attempt to remember after 45 years)

On October 2nd, 1977 the time had finally come - "The Clash" in the "Festsaal im Gewerkshaus" (also called "Porrhaus") in the 4th district.

The "requirements" for such a concert were met: a hall with seating. As far as I remember, no concerts without seating were allowed to be held in Vienna at that time under BGM Gratz.

What meant at the concert above was that shortly after the start the chairs were somewhere, just not in a row. The band then apparently had their power turned off and left the stage. A large part of the audience thought the concert was over and more chairs were "stacked on top of each other" for purposes other than their intended purpose. Shortly afterwards, the "Clash" came back on stage and said that they would like to continue playing, but not without electricity. The organizers then came to the conclusion that it would probably be better to supply the band with energy again in order to avert further disaster.

The concert then ended without any problems.

Conclusion: an energetic concert that also dispelled the prejudice that punk bands don't know how to play their instruments.

The organizer's announcement that they would also bring the "Sex Pistols" and the "Damned" to Vienna - after these "incidents" - was unnecessary. At least it sparked a discussion among those responsible for culture as to whether it wouldn't be better to hold some concerts without them The next "punk-like" concerts that I saw (without seats) were "Blondie" (February 12, 1978) and the "Stranglers" (June 24, 1978) in the Kongresshaus am Margaretengurtel.

As an antithesis to punk: the "Pink Floyd" concert on February 1st, 1977 in the Stadthalle was also great!!!

I saw the "Clash" again exactly 4 years after the first concert, namely on October 2nd, 1981, this time in the Wiener Stadthalle. The band had "promoted" themselves into a different league.

Magazines

Cycle Annie, ed. Total Control (German), no. 1, 1977, pp. 21 pages. Includes reports by Jamie J. Jones, Werner Müller, Roger, and others.

Total Control (German), no. 1, 1977

— The debut issue of German punk fanzine Total Control, produced in a run of just 100 copies, documents The Clash’s October 1977 tour of Germany alongside scattered scene notes and satire. Contributors include Jamie J. Jones, Werner Müller, Roger, and Cycle Annie.

— Published to coincide with the Clash’s German dates in in Vienna, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg (October 1977 tour).

— Describes chaotic shows, audience numbers varied: ca. 500 in Vienna, 70 in Frankfurt, larger crowds in Hamburg with pogoing, violence, and the presence of Teddy Boys.

Joe Strummer dismissing fanzines, Mick Jones joking with fans, Paul Simonon wearing Patti Smith transfers, and Topper Headon anchoring the sets.

— The issue stresses its rarity (only 100 printed) and cult status in German punk history.

Comments

"Legendary, spectacular"

Roger Heidlmayr - I was there

Gerhard Bauer - We went straight from Hellas to the gig then. I didn't even notice that there were also guests on the balcony. In any case, it was legendary and spectacular. When the concert was supposed to be over, the Clash continued playing without power until it was turned on again. Great!!!

Robert Wolf - Never seen before - great concert!

2 days later and bought myself a telecaster

Helmut Frank - Got off 2 days later and bought myself a telecaster

Fritz Ostermayer - I was at The Clash at the Porrhaus. Just don’t find me on the “photo evidence” right now.

"2 October 1977 Porrhaus, Vienna. I was probably one of the few who had seen the Clash before, a few months earlier in Bristol, England. The Clash at Porrhaus! That's where I had to go. I wasn't the only one taking pictures. I'd be interested to know where the other photos went. One of these pictures even hung in the Wien Museum on the occasion of an exhibition on Karlsplatz."
