Completely life changing!
Andy Musgrave - My first proper gig. Completely life changing!
I knew a guy who took a load of photos for Bournemouth Echo and also I've heard rumours that a bootleg recording was made but there seems to be no trace of either, unfortunately...
I remember walking out after the gig and seeing piles of tickets lying next to the box office. I must have grabbed a good handful but over the years I've been left with just one. If only I knew then what I know now..
Bournemouth Winter Gardens
The Bournemouth Winter Gardens was a significant music and entertainment venue located in Exeter Road, Bournemouth, Dorset. The Winter Gardens 4, 8, 12, 20. It was originally designed as a glass-clad structurea and constructed in 1875 as an exhibition center similar to the Crystal Palace. The second building, constructed in 1937, was initially an indoor bowling center before being converted into a concert hall with excellent acoustics 1, 5.Â
It had a capacity of 4,000 people and was situated in a prime location within Bournemouth. However, the initial exhibitions did not prove financially successful, leading to the transfer of the lease to Bournemouth Corporation in 1893. At this time, the venue began to be used for classical music performances, with Dan Godfrey starting a new Bournemouth Band 1.
The building underwent several transformations over the years. It was demolished and replaced just prior to World War II, and after the war, it was adapted for use as a concert hall due to its excellent acoustics, a solid red-brick building 17. The Winter Gardens became the principal performing venue of the Municipal Orchestra until 1954, and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra remained in residence until 1979. From the 1960s onward, it also became a popular venue for pop and rock groups, with notable performances by The Beatles in 1963 1, 5.
The Winter Gardens was closed in 2002 and demolished in 2006. The site is currently awaiting redevelopment 1 and is now a car park.

The Winter Gardens
"I left the hall absolutely drained"
Clash on Parole reports (Robin Tate)
Here' s Andy Musgrave's great memory from the night
"I was thirteen and it was my first gig. I'd spent all summer listening to the first album and was just blown away by the new single Complete Control. The Winter Gardens had a seperate bar where most of the audience had gathered pre-gig, leaving underage me sitting on my own by the stage door on some refectory tables. The stage door opened at one point and all the band came out and sat near me. Nervously I approached Joe and asked him some inane questions like when the band was coming on or something. But he was friendly and so accomodating, asking me about myself and what bands I liked. I was thrilled. I wasn't offered any spliff though, Caroline!
I can't remember the Lous at all but Richard Hell was fabulous and played a great set including Blank Generation, Liars Beware and Love Comes In Spurts.
To the rear album cover back drop the Clash strode on stage looking like they meant business. With Strummers call of "London's Burning" all hell was let loose and the place was utter bedlam. Before the first number had ended much of the first three rows of seats had been ripped out and thrown onto the stage. I don't recall any fights but just people, me included, going crazy for the band and getting carried away in the Clash whirlwind.
I remember them playing Complete Control, City Of The Dead, Clash City Rockers,The Prisoner, Capitol Radio, possibly Whiteman and most of the first album, ending with an encore of White Riot. I left the hall absolutely drained but grinning. This gig had a huge effect on me and school the next day was weird to say the least!"
A full scale riot
The Cash gig at the Bournemouth winter gardens November 9th 1977, stole the headlines locally as it was the first time a punk band had played at the Winter Gardens and a full scale riot took place between two gangs in the audience that night .
When Jonathan Ross interviewed Joe Strummer in July 2001, an email asking if Joe he rememberd the gig was read it out to him, he did remember the gig and talked about it on air.
Bournemouth council almost banned punk bands from playing the Winter Gardens after that night, but The Buzzcocks and The Undertones managed to play gigs there in 1979.

The summer of hate
the summer of hate 9: tom vague
Tom Vague edited an influential punk fanzine called Vague and contributed to Zigzag magazine. He has since written the liner notes for the Clash’s ‘London Calling’ CD set and continued Vague as the London Psychogeography series of books and websites.
Our first proper punk gig was the Clash, with Richard Hell and the Voidoids and the Lous at the Bournemouth Winter Gardens. This was a youth club trip in a handicapped kids’ minibus, much to the embarrassment of Coke who insisted that we park some way from the Winter Gardens, and Ditcher let the side down turning up without having a haircut or taking in his flares, draped in a Union Jack flag. I was wearing the then regulation Fonz-style black leather bomber jacket, ripped and safety-pinned T-shirt, big punk badges, turned-up drainpipe jeans and baseball boots. Sniffin’ Glue and the pre-Vague Salisbury fanzine were being hawked outside, and there was a bit of a punk riot in which a few rows of old seats collapsed from being pogoed on. (This contributed to the Pistols’ ’77 tour being banned.) My main memory of the gig is the bald Voidoids guitarist Robert Quine playing with green gob on his forehead.

I was thirteen and it was my first gig
Firstly I must congratulate you on your fabulous site, it's good to see.
I saw the Clash in November 1978 supported by the Slits at Bournemouth Village Bowl. I still have the ticket stub but I noticed that you already have a copy of this and also still have the tour poster. Funnily enough my memories of this gig are even vaguer. I remember hanging out with Ari-up before the gig started and her signing my boots. The Slits were usually shambolic but great. Ari took alot of heckling and at one point smashed some guy over the head with the mike stand. Budgie was drumming for them by this time.
The Clash came on quite late and started with Safe European Home followed by I Fought The Law. I vaguely recollect Mick singing Stay Free and quite a long version of Police And Thieves was also played. Afterwards I waited for my older brother to emerge from the dressing room where he was sharing a spliff with Mick, Joe and Caroline Coon.
Well, as you may have gathered by the attached ticket stub I was lucky enough to attend the gig at Bournemouth all those years ago. I'm not sure if I'm in a position to write a proper review because my memories of the gig aren't fantastic and much is lost in the mists of time!

I would love to hear a recording of this gig after all these years but it seems that no recording was made. Shame. I don't know of any photos either. Oh well....
Keep up the good work! - Andy Musgrave - Malaga, Spain.

Andy Musgrave - The Clash_ I'll never forget them running out onto the stage on their 'Get Out of Control' tour at the Bournmouth Winter Gardens in November 77_ What followed was simply awesome_ Rip-roaring full on hard in the face punk rock_ Two minute manic Telecaster thrashed tunes spat super fast by Strummer, Jones, Simonon and HeadonThe local headline in the Bournemouth Evening Echo seas 'punks in riot frenzy' because everyone tare up the seats and threw them on the stage
Chris Peckham - Buying the first album In Woolworth's had been a life changer and after the sweat dried I bought a ticket for the Southampton gig four days later .And I kept going to as many of their shows as I could and I never sass' a bad one. Yes, they posed and postured, yes their politics were confused and ultimately yes , they put the pompous into punk rock but their discography is a legendary catalogue of some of that eras greatest tunes. To have seen them, been crushed, pushed, punched and pogo-ed in the riotous frenzy seas a privilege ru cherish forever. At the Top Rank gig Jones reached down and handed me the plectrum he had just strummed *Garageland' with_ It's going m the boo with me

Joe Strummer, Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash whip up a riot at the Winter Gardens on Wednesday 9th November 1977 (Photograph Trevor King) Link
"The visit of The Clash in November 1977 ended with a number of seats in the stalls being trashed and thrown on to the stage. Because of the damage, a concert by the BSO the following night had to be cancelled. The band ended up footing the bill. As for Joy Division, their support slot with The Buzzcocks came to an abrupt end when singer Ian Curtis suffered an epileptic fit on stage and fell into the drum kit. He was carried off by roadies and taken to Boscombe hospital in an ambulance. Six months later, the troubled singer, who suffered from depression as well as seizures, hung himself with a washing line at his home in Macclesfield."
