Punk 77 .. Mick Todd recalls
Link or archived PDF
I had a look inside for the listings and to my amazement there was an article about a punk band called the Clash and they were playing at some place called The Rock Garden in Middlesbrough in a few days times. I fancied going but just to be sure I wanted to hear what they sounded like so I went to WH Smiths in Redcar and bought a copy of the Clash's first album
Poster
An original gig poster. Garry who went to the gig thinks this poster might of been from one of the Boro record shops to promote the gig as the venue was on the outskirts of town with little passing trade.

Hi I have an original handmade poster for a clash gig which I believe went down in Middlesbrough on 18th May '77. I see the Rock Garden gig was on the 19th. This poster came from a lot with many other M'bro posters mainly related to the Middlesbrough town hall. So not sure if this gig happed at the Town Hall on the 18th but I can find no record of that gig. Or perhapds the gig was cancelled, or If this is a poster for the Rock Garden gig, and the date moved? Appreciate any help.
Thanks..
Lachlan.
The Rock Garden
The Rock Garden in Middlesbrough, UK, was a significant venue for alternative music, including punk, heavy metal, ska, and blues, from its opening in November 1976 until its closure in August 1981. The building, located on Newport Road, had a rich history before becoming the Rock Garden. It opened in the summer of 1913 as the Pavilion Theatre, later becoming a cinema known as the Pavilion Picture House. After its time as a cinema, the building was transformed into a German bierkeller before its conversion into the Rock Garden.
The Rock Garden was known for its intimate atmosphere, with a capacity of around 400. This allowed for a close connection between the bands and their audience, making it a popular venue for many top bands of the day, including The Clash, Sex Pistols, and others.
One of the most notable performances at the Rock Garden was by The Clash on May 19, 1977, as part of their White Riot Tour. The Clash, one of the most influential punk bands of the late 1970s, had just released their debut single "White Riot" in March 1977, and this tour was part of their spring tour around the UK. The band's lineup at the time included Joe Strummer (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Mick Jones (lead guitar and backing vocals), Paul Simonon (bass guitar and backing vocals), and Topper Headon (drums).
Unfortunately, the Rock Garden is no longer in existence. After its closure in 1981, the venue later became The Arena nightclub, a popular spot for clubbers in the 90s and beyond.

Diamond studded dog collars
"I nearly turned around and cowered back to Redcar when I spotted my first glimpse of punk rockers. There was only four of them but what an impact they made on me, the two lads were festooned in safety pins and badges while they both were holding dog leads and at the other end of the leads wearing diamond studded dog collars were their girlfriends wearing short skirts and torn stockings, all of them looked pure evil but cool as well, I was gob smacked as I stood there in drainpipe jeans and leather jacket and thinking 'What the Fuck!'. A couple of pints eased my nerves"

Atmospheric images show mosh pit surging round the stage at the venue which in later years became The Arena nightclub
As venues go, Middlesbrough's Rock Garden can claim its place in the punk history of Teesside.
In its 70s heyday, the Newport Road venue - which started life as The Pavilion Theatre, became Club Marimba and then much later The Arena - played host to a huge number of rockers from The Sex Pistols to The Stranglers.
In May 1977, legendary rockers The Clash took to its stage - were you there?
One of our photographers was and captured a whole series of atmospheric pictures of the band from what appears to be the mosh pit at the front of the stage.
1. A sea of long haired, denim clad and leather jacketed fans pack the audience, stretching their arms out to reach the stage as the band belt out their numbers in front of spindly microphone stands.
2. Speakers are blaring out the noise and if you zoom in, you can catch the typical punk sneer on the face of the lead singer.
3. The date was May 19, 1977. The Clash had released their debut single White Riot that March and set out on a spring tour around the United Kingdom.
4. Their line up that night was Joe Strummer (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Mick Jones (lead guitar and backing vocals), Paul Simonon (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Nicky 'Topper' Headon (drums.)
5. Fans will know the iconic hit songs that came after White Riot including London Calling, I Fought The Law and Rock The Casbah.
6. There are seven images in our photographer's collection which have been unearthed from the archives here at TeessideLive. If you were there - let us know
