In the Barn, Rutgers College, New Brunswick NJ

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (/ˈrʌtɡərz/), commonly referred to as Rutgers University, or RU, is an American public research university in New Jersey. It is the largest institution of higher education in New Jersey. It is also known as Rutgers College.

The College Avenue Gymnasium, commonly known as "The Barn," is an athletic facility located on the College Avenue Campus of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

It has a rich history and has been used for various athletic events, including as the home site for all Scarlet Knights volleyball matches 6. The facility has also been a venue for concerts and other events.

"The Barn" was officially opened in 1932 and has a seating capacity of approximately 3,200 2. It earned its nickname due to its distinctive look and intimate setting, with most of the seating in the form of a balcony upstairs from the court level 2, 10

Over the years, it has hosted a number of notable performances by artists such as The Clash 1, Billy Joel 3, Bruce Springsteen 5, and Jerry Garcia 7.

Clash with The Clash

Providence Journal behind a paywall

A series of large televisions

"I remember seeing the Clash II at Rutgers Univeristy in New Brunswick New Jersey in the spring of 1984. Two friends were with me and both remember the show as well. I cannot find a setlist anyplace. In fact, I cannot find any evidence that the show took place.

Did we hallucinate the entire concert? Was anybody else there?"

The concert is perhaps the most transparent communication between the Clash and their audience, and it is in the context of such a nonmediated communication that the Clash's political efforts are most clearly seen. In the Spring of 1984, I attended a Clash concert at Rutgers University. The actions of the Clash at this concert might have appeared to an uninformed observer to be quite unintelligible, but in terms of the above discussion of the group's intention, its praxis made complete sense.

I will describe here only its use of video images. A series of large televisions were placed around the stage and played videotapes throughout the show. These videos, in classic detournement fashion, continually juxtaposed two kinds of images against one another. First, for example, Clint Eastwood would appear on the screen and then footage of the youth riots in Great Britain would appear. Back and forth from the image of the outsider to the image of the revolutionary, the video moved.

One concert reviewer was upset that Strummer, in concert, quite selfconsciously affected the character of a tough Marlon Brando on stage, but on the basis of the above understanding of the group's intention, this made sense: Marlon Brando was singing about social injustice. The Clash, dressed like hoodlums, were decrying the lack ofjustice in the world, U.S. and Soviet imperialism, and police brutality.

Memorable

Cut The Crap Tour @ Rutgers University 4/16/84

Posted by Marco On The Bass
I saw this show at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ in April, 1984. It was the only time I was able to see the band and unfortunately it was The Clash Mk2 without Mick. Was anyone else at this show? It was a memorable gig for me as a 19 year old music fanatic. I vividly remember the thrill of seeing Joe Strummer up close but also remember he seemed very out of it. He insulted the audience for most of the show. I was also mesmerized by the the ring of video screens behind the stage showing quick cut images from old movies spliced in with footage of the riots in the UK. Was anyone else there? Any have the set list or a recording? Many thanks.

Great show

Peter Grampp What a great show! One of my best 80's memories.

Terry Radtke - Link – Saw the Clash do this song  live in NJ at Rutgers in 1984.  When they sang this song, many of the fratboys chanted "USA, USA" in response to the song's refrain.  Don't think they got the gist of the message.

Chris O'Neill – Saw this line up at Rutgers University around that time, but best memory is Asbury Park Convention Hall, Combat Rock Tour

Such a roar of energy

Lewis Nelson - My 2nd Clash show and wish I could recall the details of both beyond greatly enjoying them. Such a roar of energy. I believe the opener was a 50s styled acapella group that was an ill-fit for warming us up. (Somehow I can recall my 1st GD show 2 nights later quite clearly.)

Film: 'The Rise and Fall of The Clash'

features archival footage and new interviews to tell the story of the band's final days. The four primary members of the band - Jones, Joe Strummer, Paul Simonen and Topper Headon tell their sides of the story as do Nick Sheppard and Vince White, both of whom replaced Jones, and original drummer Terry Chimes, who returned to replace Headon in 1982.
