Here are 229 tracks I would pick from this era
(in year order) with this Spotify playlist for most of them. Enjoy
-----------
I’m just a fan. I don’t know anybody in the music industry and I just bought tickets like everybody else. I was really fortunate to see the libertines right from the very beginning only due to the fact that someone posted on the Clash message board that Mick Jones was working with this new band.

I first saw them by accident at the sex pistols gig in July 2002 at Crystal Palace. I noticed them and they seemed quite good particularly for a support band. I think they were third on the bill.
I turned up at York Fibbers a couple of months later with a MiniDisc recorder to play them back and was blown away. I have never seen a band with so much energy passion since The Clash. In fact to put it in perspective, once you’ve watched The Clash every other gig that you ever attend is a lesser event. No band will ever recapture that presence on stage, that sheer excitement that something very different was happening.
York Fibbers is a small little venue no bigger than a pub with a big room at the back. It’s personal and engaging and when The Libertines came on stage I just got this sense that something very special is happening.
I went with another Clash fan, Niall from Leeds and we both looked at each other and thought, very interesting. We both agreed this was a very special band the like of we’ve not seen for 20 years.
At the time we were following Joe Strummer around - to almost every gig. I cried the day my mate Ant phoned up at 4 am on the 22nd December and told me what the world was about to hear. "Who's this?", "It's Ant, Strummer's dead, heart condition they think!". I cried. About 8 am the news channels started broadcasting it. I remember going to those next few Libertines gigs partly in some vague dark musical space broken only by the exciting prospect of Carl, Pete and Co.
I'd spent the last few years watching lots of bands, from boring mega bands to up-and-coming bands, you know the type - all hype; the NME's 'favourite band of the week', the NME's 'favourite band of the year' or the shit band with good connections or the one that the music press or some 'know it all' up-their-backside music journalist (the ones who decided the Clash had had their day) have been flogging on the radio and music press. Whether multimillionaire, household names or wannabes, they were all bland, uninspiring, an extension of some AOR or music journalists ego. When music is so turgid you are forced to keep looking backwards (punk 77) and I wanted to look forwards. Where are the passionate guitar bands? No matter how many gigs I went to we never found them. I taped quite a few between 2000 and 2005 after getting the minidisc player. I wish I could find it?
We'd had Green Day but they were skateboard punk, hit and miss. Then the music suddenly changed overnight with the 'invasion' of The Strokes, who like the Ramones, came over from the United States and inspired a generation of indie-punk guitar bands just after the turn of the millennium.
It was The Libertines who led this UK Vanguard just like The Clash and the Sex Pistols had done 25 years earlier.
Leaving York Fibbers, that tingle and returned. That desire to check where the next gig was and to go along with a great sense of anticipation and curiosity. The bouncing songs, 'a band that mattered', an atmosphere that neither Nial nor I had experienced since the days of the Clash.
I go on to watch them loads of times, probably 20 in total around the Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool area. I probably taped around six of them. It was just a shame they never came to East Lancashire.
And along with them came a whole host of new bands who produce great songs which I have set up a Spotify playlist for the ones that they have.
Like all musical revolutionaries, there are the 'believers, the artisans, the artists but then there are the opportunists. Commerciality before cultural and artistic credibility. Stadiums as soon as possible. Some of these bands slid off into popularity and in my view musical obscurity. Razorlight, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs and a few more. They were brilliant when they were fresh - and I saw them all either on support slots or on their first UK outings - but for these bands, it just didn’t last.
I also saw lots of wannabe bands. Lots of them. Hats off for their endeavour. The music press might have bigged them up as 'the next big thing and sadly they probably believed the AOR hype whilst it lasted for 15minutes but many lacked talent - or as happens with such periods - they proclaim they are 'different' and veer off to the self-indulgent music that is insipid or uninspiring. Charmless noise. It may have music to them and they may have believed that they were marking themselves out in the music presses something different, but I couldn’t wait to get in the car and go home.
There were loads of bands of 'one-track bands'. Or bands that produced a few good tracks but just didn’t have the talent to keep it going and most of the bands from the period struggled with the second album. For me, only two bands made it to a second album.
It was a period of tracks and not albums.
The six albums that do stand out are the debut albums by The Libertines, The Paddingtons, Pigeon Detectives, The Enemy, Hard-Fi (and the brilliant dub version) and The Cribs with New Fellas which improved on their first album. A notable mention to The Holloways first album.
Only The Libertines, The Paddingtons nurtured their talent beyond the first album.
Check out the playlist at the top for great tracks.
The scene, certainly around The Libertines, The Paddingtons always had that nod to The Clash and punk. The Libertines supported the Pistols and Mick Jones (The Clash) helped them a lot. Of course, they remade Janie Jones.
This period probably had as many good tracks as the punk period 25 years ago.
Many of the tracks from this period are played over and over again. I Predict a Riot, Chelsea Dagger, Mr Brightside and many more - including many that deserve to be played as often as these but in reality, they have been heard by too few.
It’s a period that should be remembered in British musical history. It should stand alongside the punky written in the 70s, the Beatles era of the early 60s and to a lesser extent cool Britannia of the early 90s.
I’ve done a list of the ones I particularly like including the rarities which are good as the ones listed above.
It was one night when I went to watch the remnants, Babyshambles at Jabez Clegg’s, of The Libertines that I saw this band that Stood out as one of the great bands of this period; the Paddingtons.
The Paddingtons should have released the second album sooner and demos for a third just show how great they were. Their first album First Comes First is a 'proper' punk album - an album you'd happily put on after 'Never Mind the Bollocks' by the Sex Pistols though the cover is a pastiche of The Clash's first album. Not the only time they'd give a nod. Like The Libertines they had talent that would’ve continued so long as they wanted to play.
They were great days and it was great to see them backstage on their musical journey. What struck me about them was just an ordinary decent these people are, proper musicians, proper people who spoke to fans and had no airs and graces.
I went up with them to do the New Years eve Dirty Pretty Things concert at Inverness where Josh was filling in on guitar for them. It was a great period. Carl Barratt was just a great guy. The Paddingtons and The Libertines, two bands that are very close.
It all came to an end but like most things, it drifted away and bands like The Vaccines came along who produced a few good tunes but in isolation.
As they say, pop was eating itself again. If I had a pound for every new band that was never going to get past a couple of tunes I’d be a millionaire. Music produced for themselves and not for the fans and concerts are just a bore.
Stiff Little Fingers are still playing live and remain head and shoulders above most of these bands. Guitar music for the people is in a depressing state in Britain. It’s back to buying a ticket to watch Jake Burns or banging out some tunes from this Indie punk period or some tribute band.
Back then I did take a minidisc to record some of them and now they sit there as a record of the sheer excitement, the thrill.
To have one great period between 1977 and 1984 was fantastic but I’m just as fond of the period between 2001 and 2006. This period appears not to have passed into the annals of musical history like the earlier punk period did at the end of the 1970s. Shame as it deserves to.
I’m left listening to old tapes and that tingle down the spine knowing that there were some special moments on stage. That for that moment, the anticipation, the walk up, we were to be carried away on some musical magical mystery, electrified, exhilarated journey by The Libertines & Co.
Nothing will ever beat The Clash on stage, nothing, for me or millions who saw them, but The Libertines came as close as you are going to get - very close.
