Punk rock band takes a different road with two new musicians

El Paso Herald Post
Fri Jun 1 1984

The Clash's current tour has taken it to smaller venues previously ignored by the band. It's quite a contrast in light of the $500,000 fee the Clash received for playing last summer's US Festival in California.

Strummer described it as a kind of revolution-ary outreach. "I mean I'm talking about towns like Oswego and Canton . . . and Omaha. We haven't done these towns, and we should've done them. Because nobody bothers to come to them except fifth-rate heavy-metal bands (playing) music that is destroying women, insulting your intelli-gence, or ripping people off."

He cited heavy-metal audiences as polar opposites of the Clash. "I think our audience is people who want to believe that there will be a future. That's the way our audience Is different from, say, a Motley Crue audience.

Because our audience is people who sense the world's gone wrong and they wanna feel like they've got time to live their lives out and they're worried about it."

While on the line, Strummer wanted to unveil a philosophical revelation: "On this tour, we've found out really how to live. We've found out the ultimate drug. I'd like to pass that on to you. Uh, it's 'No Drug.' You got it? It's `No Drug.' And best of all, it's free. You don't have to pay for It."

It was suggested that Strummer sounded as if he had found religion, perhaps become a Moonie. "Well, I'll tell ya, I'm damned if I'm going to go to Armageddon stoned. You can forget that."

My second Clash show of the tour. Headed up to Clarkson U and hung out with Jack Thorner. We then caught them at SLU the next night. Good show. Hung out on the bleachers and watched The Clash try to blow the wooden roof off this old hockey rink.

Appleton Arena, St. Lawrence University, Canton NY

Appleton Arena is a 3,200-seat multi-purpose arena located in Canton, New York, on the campus of St. Lawrence University 7. The arena, which originally opened in 1951, is home to the St. Lawrence men's and women's hockey teams 1, 7. It is one of the university's significant heritage facilities and is an iconic space for the local community 2.

Over the years, the arena has undergone several renovations. Most recently, St. Lawrence University raised funds for the revitalization and expansion of the historic Appleton Arena 2. This project, known as the Appleton Arena George W. Karpus ’68 Athletic Center, includes locker rooms and facilities for the men's and women’s field hockey, softball, and men's and women’s rowing teams 4. The construction of this project began in 2023 4.

In addition to hosting sports events, Appleton Arena has also been used for concerts 3, 6 and other university events, such as registration and receptions during reunion weekends 5. The arena also hosts intramural hockey and broomball games, a figure skating club, and Canton Pee Wee Hockey 7.

The arena was named for Judge Charles W. Appleton, class of 1897, the main benefactor of the arena as well as the riding center 7. It is located at 23 Romoda Drive, Canton, New York 7.

Awesome

danielle robarge I saw the Clash perform at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY when I was a mere 6th grader. That concert changed my life. I vaguely remember that it was a Sunday night in '83 or '84.

I was also at that show. I had to google search it because, even though I remember it and it was awesome, there was a part of me that didn't think they could have possibly played there... Glad to know it was real - pretty damn awesome! I can remember them playing Police & Thieves, Clampdown, Know Your Rights, Rock The Casbah

Film: 'The Rise and Fall of The Clash'

features archival footage and new interviews to tell the story of the band's final days. The four primary members of the band - Jones, Joe Strummer, Paul Simonen and Topper Headon tell their sides of the story as do Nick Sheppard and Vince White, both of whom replaced Jones, and original drummer Terry Chimes, who returned to replace Headon in 1982.
