A Riot of Our Own dates this gig pg 194. However local fans believe Cleveland show never happened, the book reference notwithstanding. Unusually for this tour we have no evidence of the gig. Posters, tickets, adverts or local newspaper reports. On that basis we think it may not have happenned.
"I was 18 at the time and very tuned in to the music scene in the area. I missed the Agora show because I wasn't 18 at the time. In September I was and there is no way I would have missed that. I lived in Akron, OH, a one hour drive. I have checked all local newspapers and muic papers and there is no announcement of that show nor any review." Ray Sferra

It was our second time in Cleveland, Ohio, and we had been busy with press and radio interviews, which had swelled the crowd this time around. But Joe was suffering his eternal problem of a croaky throat. He had tried lozenges, medicines on prescription, and a worrying piece of apparatus with a long tube that had made him gag, which went straight into the dumper, so I was kept busy with the electric kettle making honey-andlemon drinks.
Lowry and I decided to have a quiet night with Wild Turkey and the telly. He put down his doodlings of ideas for the cover of London Calling, always trying to make the connection with Elvis, the Beatles, the flame-carriers of rock’n’roll.
Ray said, ‘Joe’s a madman on-stage, you know. He’s demented, possessed. He came roaring over to me tonight, screaming and pointing his fingers down his throat, his face right up against mine.’ I grinned at what he must have faced – an apparition of open mouth, wired eyes and broken teeth. ‘He only wanted a drink to gargle, Ray,’ I said. We watched a documentary. Americans do the most fucking stupid things as loudly and badly as possible. Some geezer lay in a chest with a device that exploded. The bloke was revived with oxygen, then pow! he did it again!
We talked about explosions and fireworks. Ray remembered kids throwing bangers in back alleys in Cadishead, the little town in Lancashire where he’d grown up. Twenty years later and eight thousand miles from there we made the connection. My dad was from Cadishead. I’d visited him and thrown bangers on bonfire night with my cousin’s gang.
‘I’m fucking hallucinating,’ said Ray, next morning. ‘That whiskey is evil.’
I knew what he meant because I was too. I struggled to get everyone together and pulled out a camera as Ray sat on the windowsill in front of a great view of some Cleveland skyscrapers. I was worried he’d fall backwards he looked so wobbly. I took his photo. It was the only photo I took in two months in America. I wasn’t a tourist. It wasn’t even my camera – I’d ‘found’ it at Heathrow. I left the camera-work to Pennie Smith.
