Clash come to Yorkshire
THEY are the band you will never see on Top Of The Pops But you can see them live tonight or tomorrow night.
The Clash are on tour again playing Leeds University this evening and Sheffield Top Rank tomorrow .
And as usual they have given their 23-gig nationwide trip an unusual name Previously they have been part of the Anarchy tour of 1976 and headlined the White Riot (1977) and Clash Out On Parole (1978) tours This time round it is the Clash Sort It Out Tour.
It's purpose is to see the fans in the provinces and to promote the new album “Give ’Em Enough Rope”.
Clash formed in May 1976 Joe Strummer Mick Jones Paul Simonon and Topper Headon attracted record company attention from the start and CBS signed them and put them in a studio where they produce their first album in three weekends.
They also refused to appear on Top Of The Pops something which few other rock bands have ever done declaring it to be an old pop show left over from the Sixties.
And while other new -wave and punk bands have fallen by the wayside Clash have grown in stature since then The title of their new album may seem to be tempting providence- but Clash have never been afraid of doing that.

Top Rank, Sheffield
The Sheffield Top Rank opened in 1968 on Arundel Gate, before becoming the Roxy Disco in 1985. The Top Rank Suite, located on Arundel Gate in Sheffield City Centre, was a popular spot for music events.
It was considered one of the UK's most successful discotheques of its time, providing mass-market disco-style entertainment with its Steely's nights and Sunday night Improvision club, which promoted up-and-coming rock and punk acts[1][2][3].
The venue also morphed into more of a rock club in the 1970s, catering to a diverse range of musical tastes. The venue still exists as a destination for live music, and is now part of the O2 Academy Group.
Sheffield retro: Looking back at city's Top Rank - Europe's largest nightclub in it's heyday. Many would argue that Sheffieldís sprawling Top Rank was one of the UKís most successful discotheques of its time in the UK in the seventies.

Im glad to hear The Top Rank may be reopening as a music venue again,those punk days were simply awesome.A great venue,plenty of bars,you could go upstairs and watch the drummer playing from nearly behind him.

I can remember seeing the Clash in 77, hundreds queuing,the most unbelievable sights you've ever seen in your life.punk girls wearing bin liners and not much more.
Live the Clash were fantastic,they were out of tune,Strummer couldn't sing but it all came together in those tremendous songs.Watching them steam into my favourite Clash song 'Safe European Home' was an experience ill never forget. I saw them 3 times at the Top Rank and once at The Lyceum.
