Venue

Aberdeen University

The Clash performed at the University of Aberdeen on May 6, 1977, as part of their White Riot Tour. This tour was a significant event in punk history, bringing the punk movement to various locations across the UK. The tour was known for its rebellious spirit and the in-fighting between the bands, which eventually led to The Jam being kicked off the tour.

The University of Aberdeen has several buildings that could have hosted the concert. The Music Hall, located in the city center, hosts a variety of concerts and performances. Elphinstone Hall is another venue within the university known for hosting concerts. However, the specific building where The Clash performed during their 1977 tour is not mentioned in the search results.

The University of Aberdeen's campus features several historic buildings. Marischal College, built in the Gothic Revival architectural style, began construction in 1835 and was substantially extended between 1893 and 1905 by Alexander Marshall Mackenzie. The Music Hall, located on Union Street in the city center, was designed by architect Archibald Simpson and originally constructed in 1822. The New King's building, another notable structure on the campus, was built in 1913. The university's plans to transform the historic core of the King's College campus, including the creation of a new flagship atrium and enhancements to several areas, were approved in 2021.

News Reports

Sounds, 28th, May 1977

Letters Page - Disco boy

THE DJ at the Aberdeen Clash gig would like to set the record straight with G. the Wop.

I was told to play a record immediately after the band's encore by the guy behind the mixer (might even have been Bernard Rhodes himself). And it wasn't through the PA It was through my own gear. I find it interesting that the Steve Miller Band at 100 watts can subdue a Clash audience.

Anyway, the Subway Sect, the Clash were great and I'm going out to get drunk. -

Jon Travsdale, Please Yourself Mobile Discotheque, Aberdeen.

Dadomo, Giovanni. "The Front Line: On the Road with The Clash." SOUNDS, no. May 14, 1977, pp. 14-16

The Front Line: On the Road with The Clash

Giovanni Dadomo's tour diary captures The Clash's explosive 1977 Scotland shows, from Aberdeen Students Union to Edinburgh Playhouse, guitar malfunctions

— Backstage tensions with Joe Strummer threatening violence over press leaks, while Mick Jones plays through a septic finger injury during Career Opportunities

Toots Hibbert's Pressure Drop and Strummer's guitar-smashing rage during Police and Thieves

Annette Weatherman's photos of the band's chaotic energy, including Paul Simonon playing slot machines pre-show and Topper Headon cementing his place as "a great little drummer"

— Contrasts The Slits' leopard-print comeback, Subway Sect's nervous debut, and Buzzcocks' evolution from "rough as a bear's arse"

— Captures punk's communal spirit when The Jam's bassist Bruce Foxton loans his Rickenbacker to save Simonon's failed equipment mid-set.

- Dadomo's closing manifesto: "I just wanna set fire to the bloody typewriter and dance to my favorite band" encapsulates the Clash's transcendent live power

Comments

Saw them at Aberdeen whilst at primary school!

John Russell - They played the music hall instead of the students union as I believe the students union would not let non students into the gig......

George Scully - Saw them play in Aberdeen. Think I may well have both ticket stubs stored away in my house somewhere? Still at primary school as well.
