All The Young Punks:

A People's History of The Clash

All The Young Punks is a people's history of The Clash. They graduated from sweaty London clubs in the punk explosion of 1976 to become an internationally acclaimed rock act playing arenas and sports stadia. With singer Joe Strummer at the helm and Mick Jones writing guitar riffs that mixed glam rock with uptown Jamaica, The Clash turned the excitement level up to eleven every time they hit the stage.

Remembered for Strummer's political pronouncements, anthems like 'White Riot', 'Complete Control' and 'I Fought The Law' and hit singles including 'Bank Robber', 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go' and 'Rock The Casbah', The Clash were the only band that mattered for a whole generation. 40 years after they split comes their story as over 300 fans recall almost 150 different shows.

This book captures in words the sights no Clash fan will ever forget: the spittle-fuelled passion of singer-guitarist Joe Strummer, hanging off the microphone stand whilst stamping his foot; guitarist Mick Jones racing back and forth across the stage; Paul Simonon throwing shapes and a thunderous bass line into the mix; and drummer Topper Headon holding it all together with a 'boom boom' six-gun beat. With a foreword by Billy Bragg, this is a Clash book unlike any other.

Rise and Fall of the Clash

'In 1985 the band known as the Clash simply disintegrated. This is the story'.

Film-maker Danny Garcia set out to discover why one of the world's most famous rock'n'roll bands imploded at the height of its success, and why the hastily constituted Clash failed to live up to its name. It was not to be an easy task.

Here, Garcia tells the story of how two years' persistence finally won him the trust of the principal players - including Mick Jones (whose sacking precipitated the downfall of the band) and elusive on-off manager, Bernie Rhodes - and took him to the eye of Rock'n'Roll's most tumultuous storm.

With a cast of characters like a Rock'n'Roll 'who's who', the book also contains the full script of Garcia's revealing interview-based documentary and unpublished photos of the band before and after the split.'The Rise and Fall of the Clash is a head-first plunge into conflict and chaos.' The Boston Globe'The whole story, warts 'n' all, told by those who knew them, those who were there…

An engrossing labour of love which does them proud.' Kris Needs, Rock journalist and author 'If you're looking for a definitive answer to the question "Whatever happened to The Clash?" then read this book!'Mike Laye, Clash photographer'At times hilariously funny, it can also be heartrendingly sad…'Chris Salewicz, music writer and official Joe Strummer biographer

Out of Control: The Last Days of "The Clash"

"DANGEROUS LIASON". How The Clash s new guitarist caused a real White riot in the band. Seeking to inject a little danger into the post-Mick Jones Clash, manager Bernie Rhodes hired an intimidating young guitarist from Finsbury Park, London, named Gregory White- renamed Vince by Joe Strummer.

But the Clash got more danger than they bargained for when White kicked Strummer s ass in Italy, pummelled drummer Pete Howard on stage in Denver and shagged Bernie s teenaged girlfriend in a loo while the band were having dinner in Stockholm.

Rhodes had his revenge by erasing most of White s guitar playing from the disastrous Cut The Crap sessions in Munich, yet still tarring his reputation forever by listing White in the album s credits.

Twenty two years on, White sets the record straight in this powerfully lucid memoir, detailing the mind games, double-dealings and debauchery of the 1984-5 Out Of Control Clash.

White perfectly captures the voices and personas of his subjects: a tyrannical yet incoherent Rhodes, a solicitous yet disengaged Paul Simonon, and Joe Strummer in the midst of a slow-motion nervous breakdown, his already fragile will shattered by the pressure of leading The Clash on his own. White chronicles his own sex and booze addictions in lurid detail, capturing the overall Viking-rampage spirit of the last Clash line-up both on-stage and off.

'Out Of Control: The Last Days of The Clash' is a fascinating book, of interest not only to fans of The Clash but to all rock fans. White s confessional yet bare-knuckled prose style shows the influence of writers like Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski and Henry Miller, and the journalistic eye for detail of a Tom Wolfe.

If this powerful memoir is any indication, in Vince White Britain may well have a dangerous new writer on its hands. Highly recommended. (www.vincewhite.com) --Classic Rock Magazine

We are The clash

Reagan, Thatcher, and the Last Stand of a Band That Mattered

We Are The Clash is a gripping tale of how the band - fractured by its Top 10 success - fought to reinvent and purify itself as George Orwell's 1984 loomed. This extraordinary effort crashed headlong into a wall of internal contradictions, personal tragedy, and rising right-wing power as personified by Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher. While the world teetered on the nuclear abyss, British miners waged a life-or-death strike, and tens of thousands died from US guns in Central America, The Clash launched a desperate last stand, shattering the band just as its controversial final album, Cut the Crap, was emerging.

For Those of You Just Come Down To London

28 Nov. 2024

The trilogy is now complete in what has become a history of The Clash through the press and media. In this book, there is an update of publications missed from (and published since) 'No Input No Output' and 'Late News Breaking' and a vast collection of newspaper headlines/articles from around the world from 1976 to date on The Clash plus B.A.D/Havana 3 am/The Mescaleros etc.

Some press reports may make you smile, like the reporter who admitted when he was put through to Mick Jones at the Sunset Marquis Hotel, West Hollywood for an interview, that it was not the Mick Jones he had been seeking, but Mick Jones of Foreigner or the Irvine Herald reporting in 1982 that one of the support acts at a recent Clash gig was 'a magician who did a disappearing act after being spat on and jeered by impatient fans.'

Also, news from far flung places including: Joe Strummer's Japanese Red Sun flag patterned shirt causing controversy on the 1982 Japanese Tour to when The Tallahassee Democrat carried the headline in June 1982: "Has Clash punk lost its spunk."

Plus all the great reviews when the band was at its height from Maine's The Bangor Daily News headline 'Put plainly, London Calling is one of rock's best double albums - ever' to The News, North Jersey reviewing three nights at Asbury Park with the headline: "The Clash triumph in Jersey concert."

A fair few reports could be quite to the point: including the Ithaca Journal reviewing of 'The Future is Unwritten'…by asking the question: 'Does John Cusack appear because he don's a Clash T-shirt in 'Say Anything'?

The Guardian's review of the 'Resistance Street' film and 'starting a social media group for "Clash fans against the right"........'mostly led by a group of white men in their 60s and 70s, are hardly at the cutting edge of today's activism. There's a distinct impression of riding on the coattails of larger historical currents…"

Headlines such as NME's 'Clash Cadillac Raffle Fiasco' together with write ups such as in the Winnipeg Sun (in regards to the film 'Rude Boy') 'if there was a classification for movies unfit for human consumption, then this would get it' make this book the ultimate printed history of The Clash.

Anthony Davie and Tim Satchwell have both written books about The Clash and Joe Strummer, and have, with the assistance of other fans gathered information from around the world. Some books are just about The Clash or Joe Strummer, others reference their important contribution to Punk culture and way beyond, and even some that use the band and Joe Strummer as a background to novels.

The catalogue covers well known and respected authors, published by big publishing houses, through to people who are just fans and have taken inspiration from the band and followed the DiY route as small scale publishers.

Obsessive? ...yes probably, but The Clash were of course, the only band that mattered!

This is Joe Public Speaking:

The Clash, as told by the fans

"The Clash, a band who profoundly touched the people who saw and heard them like no other rock group in history. To understand precisely why would take at least 84,000 words written by those very individuals, whose experiences occurred in different countries and cultures across the world - which is exactly what this amazing and endlessly fascinating collection of memories is."Pat Gilbert: Author of Passion Is A Fashion: The Real Story of The Clash

In the summer of 2018 I was approached by the BBC to assist with a project on The Clash. The BBC wanted contributions from fans for the planned podcasts & short films. Some contributions were indeed used but so many of these great stories/memories would have just gathered dust.

So, I decided to put them into an ebook for the whole world to read.I was very fortunate to also get contributions from Pat Gilbert: "Passion is a Fashion", The Godfather of all Clash literature - Chris Salewicz: "Redemption Song", Randal Doane "Stealing All Transmissions", Mark Andersen & Ralph Heibutzki, "We Are The Clash" plus super contributions from original Clash Roadie "The Baker", Tim Satchwell author of "Combat Ready - The Clash" etc etc, Plus other top authors: Tony Beesley, Marguerite Van Cook, Frank Moriarty committed their writing talents …but above all it has the untold fans stories.

All royalties from this book will go to the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London. No one is making any money out of this.

Late News Breaking, This Just In

After researching for The Clash Book of Books, Anthony Davie and Tim Satchwell set about collecting together the covers of magazines and music papers from around the world which the band has appeared in.

Some are Clash specials, others have the band as cover stars, and then there are others with substantial or significant contents relating to the band or their post Clash bands and projects.

It took months of research and tracking down publications, achieved as always with the assistance of those Clash fanatics across the world.

The Clash's Sandinista! (33 1/3)

In 1979, the Sandinista National Liberation Front in Nicaragua overthrew the Somoza dynasty and replaced it with a revolutionary new government. Meanwhile, Thatcher and Reagan aided counterrevolutionary terrorists to suppress the rise of socialism. Thatcher even attempted to ban the word Sandinista." The Clash responded by aligning themselves with the socialist revolutionaries and named their fourth album after the Nicaraguan rebels.

Sandinista! consists of 36 songs divided on six sides of vinyl, delivering their message through genres ranging from hip hop, reggae, dub, jazz, gospel, calypso, and punk. The result is exceptional piece of socialist art unlike any other, but despite being counted among the greatest albums of all-time, critics and fans have spent over 40 years debating whether the album would be better as a 12-track LP. This book entertains that idea, then considers what is lost or gained in the process. Apart from the other 24 tracks, you lose the story of a band sacrificing their royalties to have a politically subversive triple LP available to their listeners for the price of one to tell them what the news, their schools, and their governments will not."

The Clash On Track (Revised edition):

Every Album, Every Song

This revised edition adds previously unpublished material from Joe Strummer's personal notebook and Ray Lowry's archive.

The Clash were an extraordinary band. Bursting out of the punk explosion in 1977, they recorded their self-titled first album over three weekends.

It is now regarded as the quintessential punk record.

Over the next five years, they recorded another fourteen sides of long-playing vinyl, including the platinum double LP London Calling, which was voted the best album of the 1980s and the eighth-best album of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

Through the triple-LP Sandinista! to their double-platinum Combat Rock plus a whole bunch of stand-alone singles and EPs, The Clash mixed both street and global politics with music spanning several genres, including rock, reggae, jazz, rap, calypso and rockabilly.

It provides a concise narrative of the rise and fall of The Clash, putting each song of their prolific musical output into context, including a selection of bootlegs and rarities.

There is also advice about how to buy The Clash's music without falling into the record company trap of repeatedly buying the same material through different compilations, making this the most essential guide to the music of this iconic band yet written. This is the third edition of Nick's book.

Neither a trained writer nor a music critic, he is a lifelong Clash fan with a passion for their music and the punk ethic of 'Do It Yourself '.

He was born and grew up in inner London and has spent his life taking the fight to the enemy. Nick is now a family man who spends his time playing music and planting trees in the Forest of Dean, UK.

“Awesome.” - Disinformation

“Knowles’ enlightened passion for (and tough love approach to) a subject clearly dear to his heart wins out. He willingly criticizes records he deems substandard, and his insights are frequently keen, such as when he analyzes the band’s breakup and tries to reconcile the actual historical record with critics’ revisionist myth-making. Whether or not you agree with Knowles, you’ll be drawn into the dialogue.” - Harp Magazine

“Knowles has strong viewpoints and argues them well. Granted, dozens of pages about the horrid Cut The Crap 'Clash II' period seem to be overkill, but he knows what he's talking about, and provides a load of info. This is well put-together, and fans will find it interesting.” - The Big Takeover
