Just a line to say that in 1984 on 6 of september (i taped the show) i was in Cava de’ Tirreni (close to Naples) for a Clash gig at the Stadium.
MASTER - alt source - average/edited - Sound 2.5 - 1hr 2mins - 17 tracks
A much better recording though it has some crowd singing. The opening bars of London Calling cut into Police on My Back missing allthe tracks before. The tape turnover is at the end of Brand New Cadilac.

Joe Strummer, the Clash and that raid on the Neapolitan Casbah

Joe Strummer, the Clash and that raid in the Neapolitan Casbah
The episode of "Vacalebrico", broadcast on Monday, April 14th, at 10pm on Europhone Radio (www.europhoneradio.it), is really a very intense and personal episode.
(Expired link. Archive here)
In his program of rock stories, Federico Vacalebre could not miss the story of "his" Clash, the group to which, at the age of eighteen, he dedicated the first book of his career, but above all "his" Joe Strummer, uncle Joe as he sometimes calls, recalling the London meetings in the year of the punk explosion, but also an anomalous guided tour of punk in Naples which, like Woody Guthrie, had written on his guitar "this machine kills fascists".
The Clash, or what was left of them, played the sad repertoire of "Cut the crap" at Cava de 'Tirreni and our journalist-narrator took the opportunity to take the man who wanted a white revolt on a Vespa around Naples worthy of the black ones punctuated to the rhythm of reggae: she took him to see the Spanish Quarters, the National Museum ... But let's not reveal too many details: you must listen to this episode, at least if you have a rock heart.
The rerun will be broadcast as usual on the following Saturday, April 19 at 5 pm. There is, however, no danger of missing a single appointment: it is possible to listen to the stories of vacalebric notes thanks to the podcasts of each episode aired. You can find them on www.europhoneradio.it in the "Programming" menu, "Vacalebrico" section.

a little town between Naples and Salerno
I just read on BMC that in Vince White's book he says The Clash played in Salernoalerno on the 4th of Sept. 84.
They played in Cava de' Tirreni that is a small town between Naples and Salerno (15 km to salerno an 40 km to Naples) on the Sept 6. The mistake is due to the fact that at that time the stadium where the Salerno football team played was in Cava (Stadio Simonetta Lamberti).
Cava de’ Tirreni is a little town between Naples and Salerno and the gig was held in the stadium there. Joe has been in Naples without the rest of the band several days before the show and he was spotted in several place of the city. Why somnetims it is sugegsted they played in Naples as well as Salerno.
The show was absolutely brilliant: raw, fast and furious. The new songs were absolutely fab, especially TIE. The higlights of the show were Complete and Police on my back (IMHO the best version ever). The lowdowns: Vince’ trousers. I should have a couple of pictures taken by me that I will send you when I’ll find them. Luca Lanini
Tirreni invited The Clash to hold a concert at the city stadium
I was lucky enough to see The Clash in Italy, on the 6 of September 1984. No one was expecting them to come to South Italy but the town of Cava dei Tirreni, in the surroundings of Naples, invited The Clash to hold a concert at the city stadium and thousands of people came to see them although no proper publicity had been given. It was the word of mouth which made the concert known and it was a real success.
On that occasion, Joe Strummer was seen while going around the town of Naples on a Vespa scooter. All the tracks of the albums††London Calling, Sandinista and Combat Rock and others were performed.
I will never forget that amazing concert. Link

However, Strummer's stay in Naples did not go completely unnoticed, his Mohican allowed many fans to identify him, perhaps in the alleys of the Toledo, or at the entrance of a museum, in front of
to the astonished looks of the keepers.
This Strummer who lets himself be led by 'guaglioni' in reconnaissance around the city, to see 'where they live, where they go to have fun, what are the problems to find a job, or even to find a girl' may seem like the usual Strummer, yet it is not so, he has changed the vet, and with him the Clash.

The Clash that is, sex, style and subversion

Today Joe Strummer is a much less romantically revolutionary rocker and much more concretely capable of making an impact, in a revolutionary sense if you like, in the daily lives of those who listen to him. For some it will be yet another myth that collapses, for us it is only a matter of acknowledging that the Clash, despite having lost Mick Jones, still have something to say.

Text version [English]
In the 80s the small town of Cava Dei Tirreni (originally an ancient medieval village, located a few km from where I live), in the province of Salerno, was a small "mecca" of live music.
Many remember the legendary Pink Floyd live of 1989 (an event still praised and celebrated with tears by friends and acquaintances) but five years earlier a legendary English punk group had also passed by Cava, almost on the avenue of the sunset: let's talk about The Clash!
At the time, Antonio Pannullo, aka Black Mole , an artist we have already talked about in a recent post, is a young twenty year old fan of punk music and a fan of Joe Strummer and will not miss the opportunity, more unique than rare, to admire one of his youthful heroes.
