Janie Jones

Radio interview

Joe Strummer on KNAC FM 105.5 Long Beach CA radio - 16.49mins

An edited set, probably missing the first 7 songs maybe, plus approx five ending tracks. the sound is very clear, but again big hall echo makes it sound a little distant and toward the top end.

However it is still clear and quite enjoyable. Apparently a large venue, Nick Sheppard suggested there were as many as 15,000 there this night.

Long Beach Arena, California

At the front it was insane

gbauer - I was in the pit in front and it was insane. I remember the opening act was Malcolm McLaren? Had that stupid Buffalo Girl song. He was met by a wall of loogies and vitriol. Thankfully very short set. Joe Strummer was fucking amazing.  Tommy Gun was unforgetable. I’m So Bored with USA!  Amazing set list. Classic older songs.

I’m pretty sure that they had played Safe European Home. One of my all time Clash favorites. Topper on drums as I recall.  I had seen them up close with The Who in 82 but this setlist was so much better. Having MJ there would have been the ultimate!! We left the pit completely dripping wet and went out into a freezing (for Long Beach) night. Got sick the next day too.

Not a bad gig. They scaled back the arena to half size.

Ed Driscoll They scaled back the arena to half size...not a bad gig ...diff.but stil good. The lb arena was cut in half...not a bad gig at sll..played the civic also...once again pretty good..

Scott Matsuda I was there. Nearly got trampled to death

Steve Craft I was there!

Steve Savage I was at this show.

Brett Thompson Saw the Long Beach show on this tour. Such a strange show. It was never the same after Topper left and downright odd after Mick left. I’m sure Vince White and Nick Sheppard were nice guys, but they were essentially Mick Jones impersonators when I saw them.

John Gaston I remember the crowd at Long Beach were really loving them but from my point of view, well without Mick and Topper they were half the ticket.

CREEM CONTRIBUTOR Mark Norton and I were talking several days before the Clash "invaded" Detroit, and we began discussing the concept of "armchair activism" and how the Clash probably fit into that category.

Clash unveil new line up

The Dispatch
Sun Jan 29 1984

By SCOTT FRENCH

LONG BEACH, Calif. - It took 13 songs for the Clash to hit its stride, but by that time the British rock band had proven that, even out of step. it is a force to be reckoned with.

The Clash unveiled its new lineup at the Long Beach Arena, and if it wasn't everything we hoped for, it was more than we had a right to expect. There are still a few cogs to be ironed out ó a little more guitar is needed here and little less bass there --but the Clash's new tour should be a good one. WITH NEW guitarists Nick Sheppard and Vince White joining singer Joe Strummer. bassist Paul
