A return to the Victoria Hall, Stoke
The Clash returned to the Victoria Hall after previous shows there in 1978 and 1980 but sadly the only recording in circulation is a very poor one; making this one for those who were there and completists only. A sound upgrade would be very welcome as it has an interesting set list and a longer performance than most on the tour.
Sound is muddy and distorted not helped from being an unknown number of copies off the master. It’s not awful though, some instrumentation comes through, particularly the bass but vocals are unclear and Joe’s adlibs between and particularly during songs are unclear. The sound dips a little further at the start of the second cdr.
The night before was a unique gig (sadly no recording is in circulation); The Clash performed at the Stoke Mandeville Stadium Sports Hall , a benefit gig for the famous hospital (in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire not Stoke-on -Trent) to raise funds for the Olympic Village next to the stadium for special sporting events for the disabled. The excellent Aylesbury Friars (favourite Clash venue) website has all the background and details including live photos and fascinating photos of Joe and Kosmo visiting a mixture of delighted and totally bemused patients in the hospital! http://www.aylesburyfriars.co.uk/clashjul82.html
It was quite a night with 2000 in the audience (not known in Jimmy Saville attended!) The benefit had been planned for the original tour in May when Joe was quoted in the local press of wanting to make the event a party, the band after playing planning to go into the audience and dance to their favourite records!

An energetic, thrilling atmosphere
Some memories about this show. First band I loved and I was there as a 14 year old. And lived about 2 miles from the "Vicky Hall". Hadn't seen many gigs up to this point but they seemed to be playing hard (and LOUD !) and went down a storm.
The reason for such a long and varied set might've been because of the three postponements in 1980. (Had tickets for that one too but eventually couldn't go because of a school football twisted ankle - gutted !) Joe apologised at some point with something like "Sorry for messing you around so much last time".
Not sold out - maybe 900-ish (?) in the all-standing (jumping) stalls. The Circle was definitely closed because me and my friend had snuck up and were the only ones there. A kindly bouncer let us stay rather than sending us back down to the heaving throng downstairs.
Remember it being a warm night outside and boiling inside but no spitting, no aggro and an energetic, thrilling atmosphere.
From your set-list, my scrap-book notes and my fading memory the last 8 songs were the encores, probably split 4, 2 and 2.
No Topper...but c'mon....still pretty great !
