Bath University cancelled
Rescheduled Bath Exhibition Centre

The Bristol Exhibition Centre gig was booked for the 10th because the venue at Bath was not big enough and for safety issues it was moved to Bristol Exhibition Centre. It is listed as the 10th in most cases, but it was subsequently moved to the 5th. This date is listed on Bristol posters (10th) is incorrect.

This concert was originally for Thursday, 10th November 1977, but was changed when the clash's concert at the Bath Pavilions was cancelled and the Bristol concert was changed to the 5th November 1977, which did fit in with the other dates of the tour a lot better, being the clash played in Cardiff the night before, Friday 4th November 1977. So it would have made more sense with travelling arrangements,

Bristol Exhibition Centre

The Bristol Exhibition Centre was a significant music venue in Bristol, known for hosting a variety of performances, including punk bands.  The venue was something of a punk haven, and The Clash played there during their White Riot pomp 4

The Bristol Exhibition Centre was part of the Bristol International Exhibition, which was held on Ashton Meadows in the Bower Ashton area of Bristol, England in 1914. The major buildings included the International Pavilion and a concert hall with a capacity of 5,000 2. The buildings were constructed from wooden frames covered by plasterboard 2

Richard Hell walks off

The Clash were supported by Richard hell and the Voidoids on the tour.

Unfortunately when they played at the bristol concert someone nicked richard hell's cheap plastic sunglasses which resulted in Richard Hell crying his eyes out when he didn't get them back and stamping his feet between loud body shaking sobs, before leaving the stage and the rest of the Voidoids carried on playing for about five minutes, but when richard hell didn't reappear also left the stage.

The clash were much tighter on this tour than on their previous white riot tour, playing one of their best gigs I've seen them play, and am sure that every person at that gig went home not thinking, but knowing the clash were the only band that mattered!

Dave McFarland ––– Saw them at the Bristol Exhibition Centre in Nov 77 supported by Richard Hell and the Voidoids

Mick Jones chased by Teds

"The November 5 gig at the Bristol Exhibition Centre (now the Watershed arts centre) with The Void-oids, was a strange affair with the staff selling leftover sarnies from an event that afternoon.

I think the band could cope with spit & warm beer, but cheese bap missiles were unheard of during the time. I recall the French band, The Lou's - appearing first, then poor old Richard Hell (who, I recall, hated the gobbing) didn't know that Marky Ramone played drums on this tour. Later on, chatted to Jonesy, who recanted the story of being chased by Ted's when last in Bristol. These "Teds" turned out to be jealous punks (Mick had stolen one of the disgruntled punks' girlfriend). Anyway, I had a lot of fun traveling around the UK, meeting some great people." Lost the citation.

Bangs, Lester. "Six days on the road with the foremost garage band in the land", New Musical Express, no. 10 Dec, 1977, pp. 31-34

Six days on the road with the foremost garage band in the land

Lester Bangs documents six days on tour with The Clash, capturing their explosive live shows and egalitarian ethos during UK dates in Derby, Cardiff, and Bristol

— Contrasts media hysteria about punk violence with the reality of "gentle" fans pogoing to White Riot and Police and Thieves, while criticizing gobbing as "nauseating"

— Praises Joe Strummer's righteous fury despite an abscessed tooth, Mick Jones' Keith Richards-esque charisma, and Paul Simonon's Muppet-like antics offstage

— Highlights the band's revolutionary fan interactions - letting supporters sleep on hotel floors, a stark contrast to rock star excess

— Analyzes The Clash's political authenticity versus Sex Pistols' nihilism, while debating punk's musical limitations at breakneck speeds

— Features Pennie Smith's iconic photos of the band's paramilitary aesthetic and Topper Headon's first NME portrait

— Includes backstage chaos: sandwich fights, hair set aflame by manager Bernie Rhodes, and debates over playing Booker T. funk covers

Needs, Kris, and Robin Banks. “Clash Special: Clash City Rockers on Tour.” Zigzag (UK), no. 79, Dec. 1977, pp. 5 pages, plus Lou's plus editorial.

Clash Special: Clash City Rockers on Tour

— Bumper Christmas. The Clash, following their Autumn 1977 UK tour with support from The Lou’s and Richard Hell & The Voidoids mainly by Kris Needs and Robin Banks, it combines gig reportage, backstage anecdotes, and fans.

— at Derby Kings Hall (Oct 1977), Cardiff University (Oct 1977), Belle Vue, Manchester (15 Nov 1977, filmed for So It Goes), plus other UK tour dates (Glasgow, Bournemouth, Plymouth, Bristol)..

— At Derby Kings Hall, Mick Jones confronted an audience member who threw glass at The Lou’s, showing solidarity with support acts. Joe Strummer performed despite glandular fever, while gobbing and violence marred shows.

Cardiff University: The Clash delivered a powerful set including Police and Thieves, What’s My Name, City of the Dead, and The Prisoner, with Lester Bangs observing tour antics, sandwich fights, and hotel chaos.

— Manchester Belle Vue concert filmed by Tony Wilson’s TV show So It Goes, descended into near-riot as crowds smashed through doors; hailed as one of the best sets ever captured on film.

The Clash’s commitment to fans, often letting them crash in hotels and ride in their bus, with anecdotes of Paul Simonon’s pranks, Topper Headon’s air pistol, and Mick Jones’ destructive humour.

— Parallel feature praises The Lou’s, describing them as the most exciting French band in years, and The Clash’s admiration for them.
