Audio 1 - new recording Feb 2021
Distant - Sound 3 - 1hr 28mins - very low - 25 tracks -
Sound quality is decent 3/5. Clean but thin distant. Certainly better than the Grand Circus Park show from `82. The band is on fire, despite the loss of Mick & Topper.

"I was working on the show"
I was there. I was a stage hand working for the Fox Theatre. Cellar Door presents
I remember TV sets on scaffoldings. They said if it looks right. Its wrong so they were all askew. The road crew had Mohawks. The Video guy ( who vaguely resembled the singer for Journey with his long black locks) was offered $1000 to by the crew to get a mohawk. They spread it out in front of him like a fan. He refused.
Great show. c coriz <ccoriz30 at gmail.com>

Detroit MI - Fox Theater
The Fox Theatre is a historic performing arts center located at 2211 Woodward Avenue in Downtown Detroit, Michigan, near the Grand Circus Park Historic District. It was opened in 1928 as a flagship movie palace in the Fox Theatres chain and is one of the most iconic theatres and music venues in the world 1, 2.
The theatre was designed by C. Howard Crane and was built as part of the theater empire of film mogul William Fox. The original “house staff” of doormen, ushers, designers, and matrons numbered more than 400 3. The Fox Theatre was originally billed as “the most magnificent Temple of Amusement in the World” 3.
The Fox Theatre has a capacity of 5,048 seats and hosts a variety of shows and events, including concerts, Broadway musicals, interactive stage shows, and holiday favorites 1, 5. Over the years, it has hosted performances by many top artists, including Elvis Presley and Motown legends 3, 5.
The theatre underwent a full renovation in the late 1980s after being purchased by Mike and Marian Ilitch. The renovation restored the theatre to its original grandeur, and a new multistory marquee was added 4. The Fox Theatre was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989 2, 4.
Today, the Fox Theatre continues to be a premier entertainment destination in Detroit, ranking 15th in the nation and 16th in the world in Pollstar’s 2022 Year-End rankings 1.
The Clash: They Want To Spoil The Party So They'll Stay
Bill Holdship, Creem, October 1984
CREEM CONTRIBUTOR Mark Norton and I were talking several days before the Clash "invaded" Detroit, and we began discussing the concept of "armchair activism" and how the Clash probably fit into that category.

Clash in Detroit
The article "Clash in Detroit" published in the State News on May 10, 1984, is a concert review of The Clash's performance in Detroit. The review was positively received by the band, as indicated by the fact that the legendary band, fronted by Joe Strummer, "approved" and autographed the article when the author met them backstage a couple of days after it was published.
We opened for The Clash on May 5th at Fox
From Jacques Mersereau, horn player for the American Ska band SLK.
We opened for The Clash on May 5th, 1984 at the 5000 seat Fox Theater in Detroit, Michigan. That night was most fun I have ever had in my life.
But before we went on, Mike Behrman and I were summoned to 'speak' with the Clash's manager. We opened the door to find a dour looking man with thinning hair and a sour attitude sitting back in a chair behind a desk. I think he had a cigar.
"Okay," he said, "you guys are gonna play for 30 minutes, right?"
"Sure, no problem."
"NO, YOU'RE GONNA PLAY FOR FUCKING 30 MINUTES!"
Being our own version of Rude Boys, we answered,
"Yah, no fucking problem."
'NO!' he barked
'YOU.ARE.GOING.TO.PLAY.FOR.30.MINUTES.OR. ELSE!'
We got kinda pissed and barked back, "NO FUCKING PROBLEM."
That 'guy' was BERNIE RHODES! The guy The Specials wrote "Gangster" about. We found out later that the opening bands had all been booed off the stage, some under a hail of lighters and other objects thrown by the audience who only wanted the Clash and nothing else. That was why he was such an asshole to us - lol.
We went on - not many in that 5000 knew SLK, but we hit hard with two of our original punk ska tunes run together, "Fight" and "Bored and Tired." We ended 'Bored and Tired' with a abrupt smash ending. Silence - waiting to see how it would go ... A HUGE CHEER FROM ALL 5000 reverberated through the theater and my feet left the deck and stayed their for the rest of the set. Talk about a high - WOW. One of the tightest sets SLK ever played.
Years later our guitar player, Bill McNally, met up with Joe and he clearly remembered that fabulous night.
Joe Strummer was just all together way too cool. RIP.
Somewhere is a VHS copy of our opening set - one cam from far away. Back in those days, not many had video cameras. And of course we were not allowed to tape the Clash's set, which was incredible. Mr. Rhodes had that look and attitude of someone who got 'things' to go 'his way' or you might find yourself in concrete galoshes. We didn't know him from Adam - and we'd dealt with few like him before - and after all, Detroit isn't exactly a town of wimps. LOL
Maggie McCabe I was there.
