Reid Athletic Center, Colgate University, Hamilton NY
The Reid Athletic Center at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, was built in 1959 and has been used to support several sports, including ice hockey 1. The center is part of a larger complex that includes Cotterell Court, a 3,000-seat multi-purpose arena that is home to the Colgate University Raiders basketball and volleyball teams 3. The Reid Athletic Center and Cotterell Court are located on the western side of the campus next to Andy Kerr Stadium 3.
The Reid Athletic Center has been undergoing renovations to transform it into a state-of-the-art facility. The renovations are part of Colgate University's Third-Century Plan, which aims to provide modern, nationally competitive Division I athletic facilities for the university's 25 varsity teams 7. The plan includes the construction of a performance arena in a newly constructed south wing, which will replace part of the existing building. The new arena will include dedicated locker rooms and lounges 7.
Instantly recognizable as an architectural expression of the period, the William A. Reid Athletic Center was built in 1959. It was put immediately to use in support of several sports, in particular ice hockey when Colgate dedicated its new J. Howard Starr Rink on December 10, 1959.
Reid Athletic Center is named for William A. Reid '18, a member of the basketball and baseball teams, later coach of both teams, and Director of Athletics, a post he assumed in 1935 after the retirement of Dr. Ellery Channing Huntington.
The Reid Athletic Center was completed in 1966 with the dedication of the basketball court in the memory of Wesley M. Cotterell ’19, Trustee. During this period, the Colgate student body numbered fewer than 1,500 men.
We Are The Clash
By Mark Andersen, Ralph Heibutzki
Reviewing the Colgate University gig, Robert Capiello agreed: "Any pretensions of funk, reggae, or pop [are gone, replaced by] power strumming." Though he wondered how The Clash might convert listeners chiefly concerned with "obtaining a comfortable corporate position and a large record collection," to him, the band seemed up for the task: "If their new music, particularly a song called 'This Is England,' is any indication, a new album will be worth hearing."

"Go straight to hell, boys"
THE CLASH, APRIL 27, 1984
Legendary Concerts and Performances at Colgate University
Sporting a strawberry-blond mohawk, lead singer Joe Strummer whispered to the crowd: “Go straight to hell, boys.” The Maroon reported on the crowd’s mixed reaction to the British punk rockers: “There were those in the front — dancing, slamming, singing along. There were those in the back who just did not understand what was happening. There were people dancing with their hands over their ears.”

In April 1984 I was a freshman at Ithaca College and took a couple of road trips to see The Clash and meet the band both times after the shows! I asked Paul why Mick Jones got kicked out and couldn’t understand a word he said. HBD Joe Strummer! #theclash #joestrummer #paulsimonon #1984 #hamilton #upstateny

The Clash. Spring 1984!
Comment, Press and Sun Bulletin
The concerts of 1984 perhaps were even more important to me than the records cords. I never forget ... or Joe Strummer sharing sandwiches, soda and anecdotes backstage after a stunning Clash show at Colgate University in Hamilton that seemed more like a commando raid than a music concert.
