The Clash at Rider College radio advert

Mike Lupica May 27, 2015 1980s, Audio

After racking up a reel from an unmarked box, I was rewarded with this great (albeit pretty dorky) commercial for The Clash‘s appearance at Rider College circa 1982. (I’m guessing the year based on the “Should I Stay or Should I Go” music bed. That song is from Combat Rock, which came out that year.)

Link to mp3 file

I’m not sure if this was a natively-produced WPRB commercial, or one created by the show’s promoter, but either way, it was the first of many awesome surprises in the station’s massive collection of reels. (See below.)

Were you at this gig? Are you a WPRB DJ or listener who remembers this ad? Please help us fill in the blanks by commenting here.

Alumni Gym, Rider College,
Lawrenceville, New Jersey

Rider University, located in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1865. Originally opened as the Trenton Business College, it was intended to help Civil War veterans acquire the skills they needed for the workforce. Over the years, the institution has grown into a student-centered university offering over 100 majors and minors 2.

The university has a vibrant cultural scene and has hosted numerous concerts and performances over the years. Some of the most iconic performers in music history have graced the Rider stage. In the 1980s, the university hosted performances by the Jerry Garcia Band in November 1981, The Clash in April 1984, and Meatloaf in March 1988 3. These performances are part of a long tradition of bringing successful artists to campus, a tradition that continues to this day 4.

Appleton Arena - Wikipedia

Appleton Arena is a 3,200-seat multi-purpose arena located in Canton, New York, on the campus of St. Lawrence University 7. The arena, which originally opened in 1951, is home to the St. Lawrence men's and women's hockey teams 1, 7. It is one of the university's significant heritage facilities and is an iconic space for the local community 2.

Over the years, the arena has undergone several renovations. Most recently, St. Lawrence University raised funds for the revitalization and expansion of the historic Appleton Arena 2. This project, known as the Appleton Arena George W. Karpus ’68 Athletic Center, includes locker rooms and facilities for the men's and women’s field hockey, softball, and men's and women’s rowing teams 4. The construction of this project began in 2023 4.

In addition to hosting sports events, Appleton Arena has also been used for concerts 3, 6 and other university events, such as registration and receptions during reunion weekends 5. The arena also hosts intramural hockey and broomball games, a figure skating club, and Canton Pee Wee Hockey 7.

The arena was named for Judge Charles W. Appleton, class of 1897, the main benefactor of the arena as well as the riding center 7. It is located at 23 Romoda Drive, Canton, New York 7.

The show ROCKED

Cyndi says:

July 8, 2019 at 1:10 am

I was a senior at Lawrence High and couldn’t find anyone to go with, so I took my siblings! The Clash only minutes away was a no-brainer! The show ROCKED. That was the time when concerts at local schools(Rider, Princeton and Trenton State) were a mainstay in the area.

Energetic set, the band sounded great

Michael Sea

I was at the show! Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon were the two surviving members of the longstanding line-up.

This show took place about a year prior to the release of their final album (“Cut the Crap”) and I think the reconstituted band was playing small venues to get some cohesion.

I remember getting my neighbor (a Rider professor at the time) to get tickets for me and my high school friends. I recall it being a GA event in an auditorium of sorts and we were able to meander nearly to the foot of the stage.

I got so close I could read the “Fender” logo on Joe Strummer’s guitar pick!

The audience was extremely receptive and the band sounded great. While I forget the exact set list after these nearly 40 years, I remember it as a very fun, energetic set with many of the songs that remain so important and special to me to this day.

Obviously, I missed Mick’s presence, but did not feel disappointed one iota. Instead, I consider myself very lucky to have seen one of my all-time favorite bands so close up in a such a small venue. I may still have what’s left of the t-shirt somewhere!

Michael: I was at the show! Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon were the two surviving members of the longstanding line-up. Topper was the first to go in 1982 due to alleged heroin problems and Mick Jones departed the band in 1983. Joe and Paul added Nick Sheppard and Vince White to replace Mick Jones and Pete Howard (who had been drumming with them for awhile) assumed full duty at the drums.

The tour was called the out of “Out of Control” tour and at that time, Joe was still hoping to make a go of the Clash despite the loss of Mick and Topper.

Film: 'The Rise and Fall of The Clash'

features archival footage and new interviews to tell the story of the band's final days. The four primary members of the band - Jones, Joe Strummer, Paul Simonen and Topper Headon tell their sides of the story as do Nick Sheppard and Vince White, both of whom replaced Jones, and original drummer Terry Chimes, who returned to replace Headon in 1982.
