The Palace Theatre, Albany, New York

The Palace Theatre, located in Albany, New York, is a grand cultural and entertainment facility that has a rich history. The theatre was originally built as an RKO movie palace, with construction taking place from June 1930 to October 1931. It was designed by John Eberson, a prominent theatre architect of the time, and when it opened, it was Albany's largest movie theatre 3, 11.

The Palace Theatre was initially a successful first-run movie house. However, after World War II, like many inner-city movie houses, it began to decline due to the advent of television, the rise of suburbia, and the virtual abandonment of downtown. Despite a quarter-million dollar renovation in 1960, the theatre continued to lose money and was eventually closed in September 1969 1, 3.

The City of Albany purchased the theatre for use as a civic auditorium, and in 1979, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places 7, 11. In 1984, the nonprofit Palace Performing Arts Center Inc. was established to operate the Palace Theatre 1, 5.

The theatre underwent extensive renovations in 2002 and 2003, which included a new state-of-the-art LED marquee replicating the original 1931 design 1, 9. Today, the Palace Theatre continues its tradition of hosting live entertainment, including concerts, stand-up comedy, classical performances, films, community events, and more 5 . It is home to the Albany Symphony Orchestra and has hosted artists as diverse as the Rolling Stones, Jerry Seinfeld, Bruce Springsteen, Roy Orbison, Tony Bennett, and Melissa Etheridge over the years 1, 3, 7.

The Clash played a full set

Just thought I'd mention this: Vince White's recollection is incorrect, the Clash played a full set, not two or three songs. Also, Gene mentions that most of the crowd expected Mick Jones. That may be so, but we knew there were two new guys replacing Mick (we even knew this before the Hofstra University show, roughly two weeks before).

The opening band for both the SUNY Stony Brook and Hofstra University shows was a great band called Paleface (not to be confused with the more recent singer/songwriter Paleface).

I believe they were from NYC. They had really great songs, I can recall some of them to this day, and did a cover of Elvis Presley's "You're So Square." We saw them again at a club on Long Island, then they disappeared. Anyway the Clash were great. In hindsight the Clash Mark II gets slammed, but at the time it was really fresh and new, back-to-basics high-energy Clash.

One of the most intense shows ever

Mark T. Jones I was at the Palace Theater, third and last time I saw the Clash. April 11, 1984, one of the most intense shows ever.  That's my band in life, my photo. Posted a couple of photos from this concert before, the Clash at the Palace Theater in Albany, NY, April 11, 1984. The new band without Mick, definitely missed, but this was still a super show, Strummer gave it all, intense. Onbe photo is of Paul taking lead on Guns of Brixton. I was in the front row to, that's how I got this pic. lol I wasn't going to miss one bit of this concert. What a powerful show.

Hung out w them at the hotel after the gig

Drummer Kelly I was front row and I hung out w them at the hotel after the gig. Joe threw out a suitcase to me from his bus and said “hey kid wanna grab that?” I walked in w him and the band stayed in the lobby w me for a 1/2 hr. My all time favorite band.

One of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

Timothy Roche One of the best shows I’ve ever seen. They dove deep into their catalog without Mick there to do “Should I...” “Police on my back” stands out as the crowd going nuts!

Good show and I liked their album

Alan Gold Thought it was a good show and I liked their album which came out the following year, but realized that this was a different band - especially with Mick gone.

William Rella Yeah, I was there. Joe Strummer and friends

but I was there be wouldn’t have missed it!!!

Tim Livingston Joe, Paul as the Clash in name only but I was there be wouldn’t have missed it!!!

Nippertown - Facebook - Facebook On this date in 1984, The Clash brought their Out of Control tour to the Palace Theatre in Albany. And with Mick Jones recently departed (fired), a new five-man Clash hit the road... the line up consisted of Joe Strummer (vocals/guitar), Vince White (guitar/vocals), Nick Sheppard (guitar/vocals), Paul Simonon (bass/vocals), and Pete Howard (drums).

WCDB radio interview

Dianne Pine That’s when 3 of my friends interviewed Joe Strummer for WCDB. Shout out to Claudia BesenIlan Nissan and Dave Singer!

Strummer does Radio WCDB radio ID

Link Joe Strummer of The Clash does a station ID for 90.9FM WCDB Albany (then 91FM). This was recorded during an interview the station did with Joe Strummer in early 1984.

Dianne Pine. Three very good friends of mine interviewed Strummer at WCDB before the show- Ilan NissanClaudia Besen and Dave Singer. Ilan Nissan. I recorded it this Id for WCDB after Claudia and Dave and I interviewed him. There is another one where he talks about the Palace Theater. Ilan Nissan. i have the whole interview converted into mp3. its like an hour long. how do i upload to FB? (We have asked for it).

"Hoo's the guy with the funny 'aircut"

David Reich He saw Kevin thru the glass in the live studio, and Kevin was in his "Richie Cunningham" era, with the varsity jacket and crewcut and thick rimmed glasses, and Joe, sitting there with his orange mohawk, saw him and just blurted out, "Ay! Hoo's the guy wit the funny 'aircut" Kevin couldn't hear it and we all burst out laughing...

The band bought me drinks until about 3am.

Nick Miller I was at the show and afterwards made my way to the bar at the Albany Hilton. The band bought me drinks until about 3am. Then invited me and a few other fans out to breakfast. We ate at the Denny’s that used to be on Central ave. Fun night.

It was still a pretty great show.

Terry Maloy I was there but Mick Jones was not. It was still a pretty great show. Wish we still had Joe Strummer with us!!

They were absolutely amazing still, on fire.

In the early 80's, The Clash were still riding high on the international success of Combat Rock and on April 11, 1984, "the only band that matters" played the Palace. It would be their only time at the Palace and one of only two Capital Region performances during their career and anothe post ...

Film: 'The Rise and Fall of The Clash'

features archival footage and new interviews to tell the story of the band's final days. The four primary members of the band - Jones, Joe Strummer, Paul Simonen and Topper Headon tell their sides of the story as do Nick Sheppard and Vince White, both of whom replaced Jones, and original drummer Terry Chimes, who returned to replace Headon in 1982.
