Vassar College/Walker Field House, Poughkeepsie NY
Walker Field House at Vassar College is a 42,250-square-foot building that serves as a multi-sport facility. It was constructed in 1982, enhancing the college's athletic facilities by supplementing Kenyon Hall. It houses five tennis courts and is designed to accommodate a variety of sports, including volleyball, basketball, fencing, and badminton 3.
The facility is part of a larger athletic complex that includes the Athletics and Fitness Center, a 53,000-square-foot facility with a 1,200-seat basketball gym, an elevated running track, and a 5,000-square-foot weight training/cardiovascular area 4 . The Field House has undergone renovations to improve and expand its capabilities 3.
Setlst / Recall it being really loud.

Setlist from April 6 (9?), 1984 @ Vassar College/Walker Field House...don't remember much as I had started pre-gaming around noon that day. College!
Recall it being really loud. Was Mick Jones out of the band? I had backstage access and found this on the floor after the show during cleanup...pretty sure it's Joe Strummer's handwriting. The Clash @ Bond Casino remain the most thrilling shows I ever saw, and they were still solid at the Pier the following year. RIP Joe. You were one of the greats.

text version
Vassar's Student Entertainment Committee (SEC) will not be sponsoring a concert this year, primarily due to a $13,000 debt incurred from the Clash concert last spring in Walker fieldhouse.
The Clash brought in two thirds less revenue than expected, according to Rosen, but the effects of this were not apparent until this summer.
Clash cost a lot
Unscrewed, Volume XV,
Number 2,

"Christian Games, Music Director of WVKR, has been in contact with the management of several bands which arc popular on college radio, and he reports that they are willing to come to Vassar for a minimal amount of money.
These bands will be considered by Hall and the SEC. In addition, one major act will be brought to the campus, something which did not occur last year after the SEC incurred a huge debt in having the Clash play at Walker Field House in the Spring of 1984."
The best concert I have ever seen
The new Clash I saw this show in Poughkeepsie, NY at the Vassar College/Walker Field House. Earlier that evening, doing an interview on WPDH-a local radio station-Joe Strummer called it "a cow barn" There was an opening acapalla band. The Clash opened with London Calling.
The Clash played for a very long time. Something like 3 or 4 encores. Actor Matt Dillon was supposedly in the crowd. I can remember them playing Police & Thieves, Clampdown, Know Your Rights, Rock The Casbah- It was a long time ago.
I have seen hundred's of shows since than & always compare any show I see to this one.
To this day, this was the best concert I have ever seen. I got right up front near Paul Simonon. I even reached out and touched his combat boot. The Clash played so loud that it hurt my rib cage. Probably because of being so close to the bass speakers. Would love a copy if one exists.
Joe contracted syphillis
Joe contracted syphillis and was treated at a local hospital. It was in the newspaper the next day. I saved the article.
The first song they played the floor monitors werent working so joe kicked them violently and one fell off of the stage. He had his newly cut mohawk. I think the first song was know your rights.
The show had large video monitors behind them showing them in a car driving around NYC. I bought a shirt there with 2 girls dancing on the front saying "jive after five" on the back said "steel jungle" 84 R & B showdown. I still have it.
It was a good show overall despite the sound. It was in the gymnasium at vassar college in poughkeepsie NY.
There wasnt an opening band. If you want a scan of the article or tshirt let me know. doing an on WPDH-a local radio station-Joe Strummer called it "a cow barn".
