Cancelled, "in Jamaica recording"
I was in touch with you some years ago about The Clash gig in Drammenshallen 1984. I did send you som bad quality pictures from the gig (taken by a disposal camera). I also mentioned briefly about the gig they should have played in my hometown Trondheim, but was cancelled due to Toppers injury.
Maybe it’s ridiculous and a little funny to search for stuff about a gig that never happened but anyway…If you find it interesting I’ve found some more detailed information in our local library about the gig they should have played here. I took some pictures from my phone and therefore the quality is as it is.
The ad is taken from our local newspaper «Adresseavisen» and was published on Friday 11. April 1980. It says that The Clash were going to play on Sunday 4. May 1980 at 8 pm. Support band was a local artist called Johnny Yen Bang. He was from our local punk/new wave scene here which started very early on, thanks to Casino Steel (from The Boys) who is from Trondheim and reported from the rock music scene in London in a weekly column in the same newspaper as mentioned above.
The venue was Nidarøhallen, now rebuild and renamed as Trondheim Spektrum. This was mainly a sports arena and exhibition centre, but also used as a concert venue. The capacity of the venue was then about 3 500 when seated and roughly 4 000 – 4 500 when standing. The gig was sold out in one day due to the arranger Tore Lande´s statement years later on (he also promoted the Sex Pistols gig in Trondheim in July 1977).
There is also a little article in the same paper (Adresseavisen, published on Wednesday 20. February) which says that The Clash were coming to Trondheim on 4. May 1980 (I remember this was the most exiting news that ever happened).

Skien and Oslo gigs
I´ve also found an article in the Norwegian music paper Puls that confirm the cancellation of the gigs. Originally they should have played in the cities of Trondheim, Oslo and Skien in Norway. The article says that they were to play 2 gigs in Oslo, on the 5. and 6. May. I’ll doubt this, I think one of the dates was the gig in Skien.
The reason for the cancellation says that they «were in Jamaica recording (!)». The article also mention that they probably were going to play in Oslo on 21. May, but this was not confirmed at the moment of press release. But as we know now the gig at Chateau Neuf was held on that date, and the gigs in Trondheim and Skien was never to be held.
Cheers Jon
