page updated - started July 2020
This incredible flyer was for The Clash's 1980 gig at Victoria Hall, Hanley, Stoke on Trent, featuring many delayed gigs throughout the months of February and June, these flyers were given out at the final gig that went ahead, along with a fanzine.
We have this listed as near mint minus, due to some creasing and minor wear, but this is a fantastic flyer and is in fantastic condition for a piece like this! This flyer measures 21 x 30cm and is a fantastic design, especially if you are looking for a small piece of music history.

Discharge supported them here
Hanley Victoria Hall, Feb 1 was postponed at least twice, maybe three times. I think the final date was either mid-May or early June (the May date may have been cancelled because Topper broke his finger)Poster advertising Clash concerts at the Victoria hall in Hanley near Stoke- on- trent. The concerts stated are for 1/2, 20/2, 12/6, & 18/6.
Definitely took place
"The gig at Hanley on 18 June definitely took place - J Heath"
Tony ...i went to the gig ( finally ) 1st time I saw discharge that night always thought they were an odd band to support the clash tho
The Clash certainly played. I believe that june 18th was the date and I remember a review in the evening Sentinel some time afterwards? Tickets were sold at Mike lloyds record shop Hanley (now long gone as is Lotus etc) Tickets cost £3-ish, sorry lost my ticket stub, for which I believe was dated Febuary the 1st or 2nd, I think. Certain on the month but not 100% on the date. yes the gig was postponed about 4 times and we only got tickets due to returns who could not make the rescheduled dates.
Discharge opened, i remember them tuning up on stage, then Holly & The Italians.
Clash played a largely London calling set as I remember, I recall London Calling, Bankrobber, I fought The Law and Armagiddeon Time, They possibly played complete control, Tommy Gun and the English Civil War? The place was packed out.
It was my first gig and I was only 12 at the time (no alcohol was served, there was always kids running riot at early 80's victoria Hall gigs) and was disappointed with the new material, me and my little friends wanted punk rock, what did we know about the diversity of London Calling and the 6 sides Sandanista (now my favorite album) to come. I remember my ears ringing at school the next day. Sorry can not really remember a lot. We left whilst they were still playing Armagiddeon Time, I heard a rumor years later that they came back for another encore that included White Riot. I do remember the audience demanding this track throughout the gig and the band refused the play it, saying something like that was 3 years ago or some other negative comment.
NO Doubt that they played this gig at all. I could ask my Brother at the coming Christmas Family gathering for his memories if you are interested, he was 16 at the time and could possibly remember more. perhaps he still has a ticket stub?
All the best, Paul. paulekennett[a]gmail.com

Yes I was there , there was 3 off us all teenagers ,but only 2 of us that had tickets ,so we walked around the vic hall to take in the atmosphere as it was our first gig. When we decided it wasn't fair to leave our mate barry behind so we sold our tickets for about five times more than we paid. Only to walk towards the bus stop and the stage doors opened and we were given free tickets and they were in the box overlooking the stage Amazing seats great gig (iconic) But we did leave a lot more hard of hearing as in our box there were 2 very large speakers lol Andy dykes

Victoria Hall, Hanley, Stoke
Victoria Hall in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent is a historic concert hall that opened in 1888 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee the previous year 1 2 3. The classical Grade II Listed building was constructed in local red brick and terracotta, originally holding 2,800 people 3.
The hall has hosted many famous conductors and performers over the years 2. The organ, which has four manuals and over 4,400 pipes, was originally built for the Yorkshire Royal Jubilee Exhibition in 1887 and later gifted to the hall by local businessman George Meakin24. It has undergone several rebuilds and renovations, most recently in 1998 by David Wells Organ Builders 4.
In 1999, an extension was added to the hall as part of the development of Hanley's Cultural Quarter, providing better facilities for audiences and performers 2. Today, the refurbished and extended Victoria Hall seats 1,467 people and is one of the most popular venues on the touring circuit, attracting big names in music and comedy 3.

David Proudlove - The Victoria Hall dates from 1888, and was the brainchild of the Borough Surveyor, J. Lobely. Built in local red brick and terracotta, the classical Grade II Listed venue originally held 2,800 people, and has, over the years been the scene of numerous concerts, wrestling contests, boxing matches, and many rock gigs. I can personally testify to the hall’s legendary acoustics, having witnessed two of the city’s great gigs of modern times there: Primal Scream in 1994 and Suede in 1995.
By the mid 1990s though, the building, along with its parent town, had become tired and run-down and in need of some serious attention. The City Council identified the Victoria Hall – which although in need of a revamp was still operating successfully as a touring venue – as the potential catalyst of a cultural resurgence. A planned revamp of the Victoria Hall, along with plans for a new theatre through the conversion of a stunning Art Deco cinema, and a raft of public realm improvements, formed the City Council’s ‘Cultural Quarter’ initiative. Levitt Bernstein were selected as architects for the scheme and produced a stunning adaptation and extension of this great building, providing first class new facilities. The new Victoria Hall opened its doors in 1998, and has since been able to exceed all of its visitor targets.
The Victoria Hall extension is considered by many to be a nationally important example of how to extend an historic building without resorting to pastiche, and is certainly the most important architectural work in Stoke-on-Trent for many years; unashamedly modern, yet traditional too in the way materials common to the area are utilised, though with a contemporary twist. The principle behind this approach to extending a building is not new, and the Victoria Hall extension follows a trend that was started by the Georgian extension of the timber-framed Ford Green Hall many years ago.
