The Clash at Canterbury
ONE of the last surviving true punk rock bands still enjoying success, The Clash, play Canterbury Odeon on Sunday.
The four piece band from West London were one of the first groups to sign for a record company during the new wave explosion in 1977.
Their first album "The Clash" followed last year by "Give 'em Enough Rope established them as the best of the punks.
Despite their success they have always remained true to their original ideals and much of their music, which has a lot of reggae overtones, carries a strong political message.
Their latest album "London Calling" and the single of the same name are also enjoying wide acclaim and should ensure a sell out for the Canterbury concert

Canterbury Odeon
43-45 St. George's Place, Canterbury, CT1 1UP
In January 1980, the Odeon Theatre in Canterbury was still operating as a cinema. The building, originally opened as the Regal Cinema in 1933, had been renamed the ABC in 1963 and was operating under that name in 1980 8.
The venue was not only showing films but also hosting live music performances during this period. In fact, on January 6, 1980, The Clash performed at the Odeon, with Glen Matlock as the opening act 7. This concert was part of a trend in the late 1970s and early 1980s where the Canterbury Odeon hosted a number of major musical acts 2.
The cinema's history would continue to evolve after 1980. Later that year, in August, it would celebrate its 47th anniversary 8. The venue would undergo several more name changes in the following years, becoming Cannon Cinema, then MGM, and finally adopting the Odeon name in 1990 1.

Odeon Canterbury in Canterbury, GB - Cinema Treasures
Built for and opened by the County Cinemas chain as the Regal Cinema, it opened on 5th August 1933 (the same date as the city’s new Friars Theatre opened, later to become the Odeon). The opening film was Jack Hulbert in “Falling For You”. The Regal Cinema had a seating capacity of 1,750 in stalls and circle levels. It was equipped with a Compton 3Manual/9Rank organ which was opened by Reginald Foort. There was also a ballroom and a café for the convenience of patrons.
County Cinemas relinquished the building on 4th April 1935 and it was taken over by Associated British Cinemas(ABC) from 29th April 1935. The Regal Cinema was closed on 31st October 1942 due to bomb damage and re-opened in February 1943. It was re-named ABC from August 1963.
Closed on 5th August 1972 for twinning into a cinema bingo operation. The former stalls became a bingo hall with a 536 seat ABC cinema in the former balcony which re-opened on 26th October 1972.
Later re-named Cannon Cinema, the stalls bingo was converted back into cinema use to become Cannon screen 2 from 5th August 1988. Later takeovers have seen name changes to MGM Cinema, back to ABC Cinema and currently Odeon Cinema, with the screens now seating 494 and 381. A Costa Coffee was operating in the main foyer (they have since moved out).
It was closed on March 16, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021 it was used as a Covid vaccination centre. Repairs were being carried out on the roof before the cinema can reopen. It was still closed in March 2022. It was announced by Odeon Theatres on 24th August 2022 that the Odeon will be closed permanently. In late-December 2022 a sign on the building stated it was ‘Available To Let’.

Absolutely awesome gig
Baz Barrett - 45 years ago today I went as a 15 year old kid to this my first gig. £3 well spent (£16.50 in today’s money with inflation). Topper Headon was playing (nearly) a home town gig on the ‘16 Tonnes’ tour. Topper’s dad was the headteacher at my primary school and you still see Topper walking around the village now. Life changing - definitely! The first of many gigs and still going 45 years later. Facebook
Edward Wulin - Absolutely awesome gig
brilliant night
Marco Ramone - I was there, brilliant, absolutely amazing night. Facebook
Mike Avery - Mine from the same gig. Ticket 20
