A few questions… Can you introduce them?

Yes, so… To begin, we'll introduce them one after the other. On the guitar and on the vocals, there's Mick Jones. On the drums, there's a new guy who wasn't on the first album, who's called Nicky Haddon. On the guitar, there's the leader of the band, Joey Strummer, and who speaks French as we can see, and at the base there is a reggae fan called Paul Simonon.

How long is it since The Clash have started?

It's about two years now.

What are the projects now? I mean you're doing a big tour, is there a record coming with it?

Complete Control, the next one. A 45-rounder called Complete Control. And the Christmas record, that's also…

And I think The Clash is quite famous among all the English punk bands to be the most politicized of all. I think you've been said to be a political group.

Yeah, they have said it. Yeah, it's true. Sort of. Okay, yes, it's true, it's a political group.

How does it work in the life of everyday to be a political punk band in England?

Oh, right. Well, it's a street party, it's not political parties. Oh, it's not a political party on the left or on the right, but it's life on the street.

What's the next song?

Wait, there's Patrice, excuse us, he's… Freddy, can you hear me? I wanted to know if the punk bands have an ideology behind them or if it's just a purely musical movement. Can they answer the same, Freddy?

They say it's music and it's a rock'n'roll group and it sums it all up for them.

Well, he doesn't look convinced, Thierry, I mean.

Okay. There are no more questions here, Freddy. So, they can play?

Okay, what's the next song? What's the next song?

Complete Control. Complete Control. Absolute Control.

Michel Drucker French TV show, Paris

The Clash performed on the Michel Drucker French TV show. Michel Drucker is a popular French journalist and TV host, born on September 12, 1942, in Vire, France. He has been on screen for various shows and different networks, both public and private, since 1965.

After the performance, The Clash went to drink at "La Coupole," an "existentialist cafe," and finished the night at the Gibus Club.

A French fans eye view

After the gig, the CLASH went to drink at “La Coupole”, an “existentialist cafe” and finished the night at the Gibus Club.

They saw the local band ASPHALT JUNGLE which they had just mentioned in their “Paris is singing” version. For the TV show, the scenery was “very” punk with flying pterodactys!

This TV show was produced by “Un sur Cinq (1 out of 5)”, a social and culturel broadcast. Freddy Hausser produced the “Pop News” rubrique and presented the CLASH with Phillipe MANOEUVRE (who wrote “Cheap trill” in Rock’n’Folk magazine).

The CLASH played “London’s burning” at the sound check but the cameramen didn’t want to continue. They striked cos the CLASH played too loud. Just one man accepted to film. So, it was a fixed and large plan. 15 min. later, the CLASH played “Complete control”, then “1977”(cut) and it was over.

Cheap thrills

THE RETURN OF THE CLASH

Should we really enslave the best column in " Rock & Folk " to a single little punk group? Know, O benevolent reader, that the desire to tell you a fable in the manner of The Clash torments me. Follow me without fear...

THE CLASH CONCERT

It is useless to bother you with the concert. Joe Strummer , suffering from a cold, had no voice left. The venue was packed. The audience was won over in advance. In such circumstances, The Clash don't have much to offer. They are like a tank on Armistice Day. They will return.

MY FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH THE CLASH

Takes place at La Coupole . Barely arrived, I cannot help but reproach them for coming to dine in this Sartrean haunt. To these ideological doubts, the manager of The Clash , Bernard , cries out: "I knew it! I was sure of it! We won't meet any real kids here, will we? Where are the 14/15-year-olds in the evening in Paris ? In which club? Because that’s where the Clash want to go!" Everyone explains to poor Bernard (called Bernie ) that at that age, the most frequented club is the TV. "And even then," someone says, "there are some who even do their homework!"

THE CLASH DINNER BY THE MENU

Nicky Hayden , drummer: steak frites, salad. Mick Jones , guitarist: fried herring, potatoes in oil. Joe Strummer , singer: nothing. Paul Simonon , bassist: six oysters, twelve snails, a welsh rarebit, a pork chop, and fried eggs. No one had dessert. NO ONE HAD DESSERT!!!!!

THE CLASH EVENING

Next, The Clash go to the Gibus Club . Their means of transport: a minibus rented from Avis by the concert organizer. Fifteen of them pile inside and off they go! Good night, The Clash !

THE CLASH ON TV

The Clash are to perform live during the show " Un sur Cinq ". The set has been arranged by a producer who gave free rein to his wildest punk fantasies. In this case, it consists of a dozen cardboard pterodactyls waving at the end of nylon threads. The roadies find them hideous.

THE CLASH REHEARSE BEFORE PLAYING LIVE

And they play " London's Burning ". Nervous as wild cats, hair bristling, they leap on the spot and are simply fantastic.

THE UNION DOESN'T LIKE THE CLASH

As soon as the song ends, you can tell something is wrong. All the cameramen, all the assistants, and all the technicians are gathered at the back of the set. What are they doing? They are squawking like a flock of starlings struck by lightning. The explanation: The Clash are playing too loud; the camera operators refuse to frame them. Immediately, they alert the union and the company doctor.

THE DOCTOR DELIVERS HER VERDICT ON THE CLASH

The doctor is a lady who hides her age under Chanel makeup. She takes the side of the complainants and gives a moving speech about decibels, which are supposedly sad things—very dangerous and capable of making one deaf and much worse besides. Marc Zermati flies at her, and Freddy Hausser shows her his backside. The doctor flees.

AND THE SHOW, THEN?

We move toward a compromise thanks to Joe Strummer , who persuades The Clash to play quieter. The producers declare: "Quieter, even quieter."

THE CLASH'S CLOTHES

Somewhat disoriented by the turn of events, The Clash are led into a large bare room where, sitting on the carpet, they wait for the start of the show. Joe Strummer lends his Eclair zipper jacket to Paul , who puts it over his mesh t-shirt. Joe pulls clothes out of a large plastic bag. He puts on his "You are all whores" t-shirt and admires himself in a mirror. "What about me, what about me," asks Nicky , "can I have a t-shirt too?" "You, take care of your hi-hat," Bernie tells him. Nicky quickly screws it back on and throws himself onto the t-shirts. He chooses a beautiful bright red one.

THE CLASH GO TO THE LOO

Suddenly, Mick asks Paul : "Will you come with me?" Paul grumbles a bit, then stands up. They both leave. Where are they going? I am looked at with surprise. "Why, they're going to the bog, of course!" I learn that The Clash always go in pairs to avoid being attacked from behind by fascists. Q: What do the others do during all this time? A: They listen to a reggae cassette.

THAT'S IT, THE CLASH ARE PLAYING

Two of the three cameramen have gone home. A single guy, quite remarkable, will do all the work from a fixed shot, as far away as possible.

THE CLASH IN THE CORRIDOR

Between their two sequences, The Clash have a fifteen-minute break. I find them sitting in a corridor of blue bricks, squeezed onto a small bench. Terrorized by the big technicians who threaten to smash the Coke machines with their boots if they don't get their change back, The Clash clutch their guitars. Sweating in their stage clothes, without a single photographer to immortalize them, they offer a living tableau of punk rock. Young and fierce.

MICK'S OPINION ON THE TV

"I find it particularly insulting, artistically speaking, to have a fucking union doctor come and tell me what I should do with my guitar."

THE RETURN OF THE CLASH

This is it, it's their turn again! This time The Clash play " Complete Control ". They turned the sound back up (a little bit), and they are superb. As planned, they also play " 1977 ", but the cameras are no longer rolling. The time limit has been exceeded, and the managers are making large signs to The Clash : "Stop everything! Stop everything!" Indeed, the set now belongs to Pif le Chien .

THE CLASH AUDIENCE

When The Clash leave the set to make way for Pif le Chien , I observe two old TV employees hiding in the scenery. Judging by their blue smocks and white hair, they must have seen every reform pass by without ever changing their status. "Ah, it's a real shame," cries one of the cleaning ladies. "Oh yes," her companion replies, "it's over already!"PHILIPPE MANŒUVRE .

LE DINER DES CLASH PAR LE MENU

Nicky Hayden , batteur : steak frites, salade. Mick Jones , guitariste : hareng frit, pommes à l'huile. Joe Strummer , chanteur : rien.

Soudain, Mick demande à Paul : « Tu m'accompagnes ? » Paul râle un peu, puis se lève. Ils partent tous les deux. Où vont-ils ? On me regarde, surpris.
