Audio (1) may exist

Thought a recording does exist;

"Here's a photo (see 4 photos at bottom of page) page) from the morning paper June 15 '77 from Gröna Lund. There were 1400 in the audience. The show lasted for less than an hour. I have the entire show on tape but it doesn't work at all.

A friend is trying to separate it as I write and I hope anything will be saved from it. They were splendid and it was my second show but still in 2008 the best by far. I know that they enjoyed playing here and it shows with one exception: the 1984 gig with CII. They had a real fight before they went on stage and it takes about an hour before they sound happy and look comfy again.

The other photo is from Örebro June 12 '77. 400 in the audience. Nothing but blur on the tape. There's more if you want them.
For now and take care! Richie"

Audio (2) Swedish Radio

When I asked an old Clashist friend and journalist on SR ( Swedish Radio ) what had to be done to get all those shows ( Malmö, Lund, Örebro '77, Eriksdal '80, Stockholm and Gothenburgh '81 and '84, they have them all - complete with perfect sound!)

I got the answer that if a show is asked for by more than 1000 people they'll put it on the list for P3 Live, a live show every night at 21.00. (Have a look att www.sr.se and go to P3 Live and see the program and old shows.) Unfortunately it's only 1 hour and therefore edited.

Audio (3)

Joe spoke a lot. The sound was bad but there where several taperecorders up in the air and I tried to listen to it with some friends in a suburb flat a couple of days later and it sounded awful so we didn't even hear it through but today I have stuff in my collection that probably sound worse but back then I didn't know about tape trading or bootlegs. I have some dia pics from the gig somewhere in the house; I looked at them when I last found them a couple of years ago.

They played Capitol Radio + the whole first LP exept What's My Name. Started with London's Burning. The first song after bringing the crowd back in again after the bomb threat was 48 hours and the last encore was White Riot. I can't recall any of the tunes in between. Heavy Roots-Reggae on the soundsystem before the show.

Background

A hot summer night

Gröna Lund is a funfair. It was a hot summer night. The Clash was to play between 20.15-21.00 but it the band played for nearly an hour. Every artist at Grona Lund was given exactly 60 minutes.

If like Jimi Hendrix in '69, they kept on playing, the staff simply pulled the plug. That as policy til 1978. Kiss played for 55 minutes (there's a video going around) in '76.

Venue

Grona Lund

Gröna Lund is a permanent attraction in Stockholm, Sweden, featuring exciting rides, restaurants, bars, and an important concert stage on which many famous artists have performed[2]. The venue has a long history with concerts and events taking place there since at least the 1970s[4].

Posters for events and concerts at Gröna Lund have become highly collectible, with Nils Sture Jansson designing about 800 individual posters between 1971 and 1988[2]. The tradition of Gröna Lund posters has been continued by Kristian Russell.

At Grona Lund in Stockholm, Sweden they have a wall of photos of the artists that have played there over the years so I took a photo of The Clash.

The translation for the wording is as follows:
"The bands first show in Sweden was on the big stage of course.
Introducing the punks to Grona Lund were 5000 visitors"

The Clash - Rock, Weed & Booze

1970s Swedish interview depicts The Clash as exhausted, drug-fueled rebels. Joe Strummer discusses their working-class roots, disdain for the establishment, and rejection of "preachy" politics despite their fame.

Original Swedish Text (OCR), English Translation (below)

Lund GENERAL OFFICE

  • Varför satt ni i fängelse?

  • Hur bildades Clash, Joe?

THE JAM!

English Translation

Lund GENERAL OFFICE

The Clash, four English punk rockers who are political because they survive, who like to play rock, get girls and party hard.

ROCK, SMOKE AND PARTY HARD...

THE CLASH is the flagship of the new wave.

Four punk rockers from England who have quickly reached the heights where people kneel before them.

The Clash doesn't give a damn about that. The members live out the only dream the rock world can make come true: Stand on stage, get girls, party hard, and get paid for it too.

I meet four tired punk rockers after the Stockholm concert.

Hash smoke hangs thick. Reggae blares from a cassette player. Bassist Paul Simonon rolls a "joint", guitarist Mick Jones gets lost in the distance, drummer Nicky Headon paces back and forth, Joe Strummer takes deep hash puffs and grins.

"Fck how bad we were. But I haven't slept for several days, understand?* Nicky and I have been in prison for three days. What the fck am I doing here,* asks Strummer.

His eyelids are heavy. He needs help finding the thread of the conversation. When he grins you can see that his teeth are black and seem worm-eaten.

  • Why were you in jail?
    Ah... we stole some peyos.

He likes it, jumps up and dances convulsively to a Jimmy Cliff song, says:

Reggae, it's nice. The black man's music, understand? You can...

Manager Bernhard Rhodes counts the money he made selling t-shirts at rip-off prices at Gröna Lund.

  • How was the Clash formed, Joe?
I played on the street, begged, I played in the 101:ers. Then I met Bernhard who formed the Clash*.

  • What were your intentions?
Intentions? What the fck are intentions? We just wanted to play. And write.*

  • Are you political?
We don't like voting rights, and politicians and shit. And we hate fascists. We're not for any fcking demonstrations. But we are political as far as the struggle is concerned.*

  • But the lyrics are critical of the establishment...
We write about our reality. We write for the kids on the street.

  • Couldn't you do something with audience contact?
    You mean "couldn't-we-do-something-useful-with-our-energy-and-audience-contact".

  • Approximately, yes.
No! And do you know why? We don't believe in pointing fingers. Don't want to give orders. Don't want to preach, understand? We offer them our music and say "here it is, do what you want with it".

  • That sounds vague, Joe.
He shrugs, jumps up and dances again.

  • You're so typically English, isn't it hard to make contact with a foreign audience?
England is the best, understand? The audience knows what it's about. They are like us... working class... criminals. France is okay. But what the fck, the French aren't smart. They fall for everything. They are crazy. And the Dutch, they are...* you're not fcking Dutch, are you!... the Dutch are so fcking drugged, passive.

  • You who are against the established, have a contract with a highly established record company, CBSHow does that fit together?
We have to get the records out, understand? He is silent for a long time. But it's a fcking mess. From morning till night. A fcking mess. With CBSUgh, hell.

  • The "new wave" is apparently not united. A band like The Jam stands up for the monarchy and the establishment.
THE JAM! For fck's sake, don't talk about* The JamFcking fags, understand? An essex fag on 19 years who does whatever the fck comes into his head. He's more wimpy than StingI'm 21 and I know what I want. They don't know anything. Jam*... haha... don't talk about* The Jam*,* StingThen they go to China and dress up nicely and become dancers. Then they eat at a party all evening.

Bernhard Rhodes, the manager, blinks behind his glasses. He finally looks established. Despite the punk clothes.

I was completly paralyzed

Joakim Thåström; "There is nothing that has hit me so hard. I was completly paralyzed. They looked incredible. I nearly died when they came on stage....They had it all. The best I have seen. Link

Really good despite the "acoustics"

Jan Oldaeus - I was there, baggy sound no pressure.

Johan Blarre Hargeby - Was there in The Clash lounge after the gig, wanted a beer, they gave me a soda..

Anders Wallin - Sounded like shit. Had a fight with a ragger. Was interviewed by P3 about what punk was. Provided annoyed information.

Hasse Gustafsson - Be there. Fights with the rags who had no idea what the Clash was. Clash was really more raggar rock later. I fought the law was one of their raggar covers. Agree that the sound was deplorable. They drove the whole first Lp n straight off.

I was there

Ulf Hansson - I was there, the concert was no speaker!

Bernt Lindholm - I was there!

Jassa Singh - I sat at Kastellholmen and listened. Quite impressed.

Rachel Starbuck - I was there

Michael Rocklind - I was there,,,damn good concert it was near the stage not roaring high volume,,,just damn good rock, the drummer was selling merch,

Tom Krischausky - I was there. Thought it was really good despite the "acoustics". Saw them 3 years later in Lund. Better sound.

Ulf Björe - I was there!

Thomas Totte Gabrielsson - Yes, I was there

I was there, life changing moment

Thomas Totte Gabrielsson - I was there, life changing moment

Robin Tate - John Brett wrote last year… Great venue it's on an island, you have to get a boat to it. With the band playing in the middle of a fairground, whilst the rides are still in progress! I saw Iggy there in 2016, fabulous. Cheers for your memories John
