Motor City Roller Rink, Detroit

Some of you have already seen the previous color photos of this epic Clash show I've posted in March. If not, the venue and show description is at the end of this post.

This photo is one out of three I'm printing as a black & white series. This one is my favorite, and really captures the ferocity and energy of the band and audience. I retouched the fragile negative scan pixel-by-pixel and I admit, most of the audience, I've seen every pimple. A sea of guys, and maybe 3 women. Pretty much summed up the Clash shows. I'm printing the three photos as a triptych, super hi-res, silver gelatin, gallery quality History captured. Joe Strummer Rock photo galleryMorrison Hotel Gallery

The Motor City Roller Rink just North of downtown Detroit was a full-fledged rink most nights, but in the late 70’s and early 80’s, Iggy, The Ramones, The Jam, Pretenders, Heaven 17, and PiL were turning it into a solid music venue. But - there was one night that stood out. March 10th, 1980 when the Clash dropped in at the last minute to stage a benefit for the legendary Jackie Wilson, the Detroit soul singer who inspired Elvis Presley, James Brown and Michael Jackson. One of the incredible shows the Clash put together at the end of their 1980 winter tour. This was a last minute benefit for the legendary Detroit soul singer Jackie Wilson. Mickey Dread opened the show, Kosmo DJ'd and a 2+ hour set.
