Glasgow Apollo January 1980

Joe Mccaffrey : I was at the show at the Glasgow Apollo on January 21, 1980,

The show was a pain to get into, because there was such a high demand for tickets since the Clash hadn't played there for a couple years.

The line to the box office stretched around several blocks. Me and a few of my mates pretended we were with some guys near the front of the line so we could get tickets.

I remember the Clash didn't actually come on until after 10:00, due to some problems with their amplifiers. There were a couple support bands. I don't remember too well, but one band was really good and the crowd didn't gob too much on them. I think they were called The Atom Bombs or something.

Finally the Clash came onstage and the place erupted. I was about 20 feet from the stage, but the whole crowd was jumping about. There wasa little trouble with some of the bouncers at one point, so Joe told them to piss off and the crowd cheered.

I remember they played Death Or Glory which was a highlight, and during Garageland Joe leaped from an amp stack into the crowd. This again caused trouble for the bouncers, who were throwing kids about, trying to tame us. Joe got really pissed and kicked over an amp into the pit where the bouncers were.

There was a great version of White Man from what I remember, which had the whole crowd singing along and lots of adlibs from Joe and even Mick at the end. They also played Armageddon Time, which I hadn't heard before. I remember all the lights were dimmed and it was hard to see, which really added a spooky effect to the song, along with Joe's vocals which really echoed. In comparison to a show I saw at Dunfermline in '78, I didn't think Mick was quite on top of his game that night, but he still jumped about the stage and kept up the energy.

I saw the Clash 4 times between 1978 and 1981, and this was by far the best (and longest) of all the shows.
Cheers, Joe < >
