THE CLASH - ISRAELITES

In 1979, THE CLASH were guests on the Tyne Tees produced music show Alright Now performing HATE & WAR, ENGLISH CIVIL WAR and a cover of Desmond Dekker and Leslie Kong's ISRAELITES.

The video here features newly discovered high grade footage of the performance of ISRAELITES. The video here is courtesy of JOHN HESTON who we are indebted to for liberating the clip from The ITV archives.

"Showtime and the band plunge into an efficient if uninspired `English Civil War' while the split screen displays Short self- penned biogs (Mick's biggest influence - third rate rock bands 67-73, Topper's hobby - milking goats)," wrote Pete Silverton for Sounds magazine, "and then moves over to the discussion with Den [Hegarty, former singer with Darts] and the kids."

"Den welcomes them by announcing "Well this is punk and there's not a green hair in sight apart from the ones up your noses. " The rest of the talk was inaudible but as Den walked away I did hear him mumble "Mmmm, novel."

"To finish the show, Mick sang a charged `Hate and War' and then Strummer led them all into their embryonic arrangement of Desmond Dekker's `Israelites' with Den on bass vocals and crawling around the floor biting Mick's leg. As a genuine gesture of friendship toward the crowd the band did a couple more songs and the kids got the chance to invade the stage leaving Jones stranded high on the drum riser like a nattily dressed Noah."

"The band had gone, the floor manager returned. "The next thing I want to see is you, the stars (i. e. the audience). I what you to give me a big cheer and a bit of applause to camera one. " They faced the camera. They cheered. They applauded. They were asked to leave quietly. They did."

A Clash fan who attended the recording said, "The band played a couple more tracks afterwards but I dont know if these are recorded, though they were not broadcast."

"…the Clash were only booked to play 3 or 4 songs. But they were p issed off with the TV company pushing the audience around (and so were the audience...see the video) that they ended up playing for about 40-50 mins, mainly a greatest hits concert. Don't ask what the set was, I can't remember, but again have been told that only 3 songs were recorded by the TV company, the same ones that were broadcast."

Missing songs?

Someone who was there wrote to us to say that;

"the band played a couple more tracks afterwards but I dont know if these are recorded, though they were not broadcast.

I was at the All Right Now recording of the Clash at Tyne Tees studios in Newcastle, and the Clash were only booked to play 3 or 4 songs. But they were pissed off with the TV company pushing the audience around (and so were the audience...see the video) that they ended up playing for about 40-50 mins, mainly a greatest hits concert. Don't ask what the set was, I cant remember, but again have been told that only 3 songs were recorded by the TV company, the same ones that were broadcast."

Hosted by former Darts singer Den Hegarty

Alright Now is a British rock music television series made by Tyne Tees Television for ITV in 1979-1980.The show was named after the song "(Channel 3 network in the UK) All Right Now" by the band Free. the series showcased both established and up-and-coming acts, with a focus on those from North East England.

The show was initially hosted by former Darts singer Den Hegarty, but he was dismissed from the show for "outrageous" behaviour,[1] he later became the host of the children's show Tiswas, which also aired on Tyne Tees and most of the ITV network.

Tyne Tees (ITV), Alright Now programme

Alright Now was a British rock music television series produced by Tyne Tees Television, airing on ITV from 1979 to 1980. The show featured a mix of established and emerging musical acts, with a focus on bands from North East England. It is notably named after the song "All Right Now" by the band Free [1] .

The Clash made a memorable appearance on the show, performing "English Civil War" and closing with "Hate and War." Their segment included interviews that showcased their punk ethos, reflecting the show's blend of music and engaging dialogue [1] [2] . This performance helped to highlight the band's rising prominence in the UK music scene during that era.

TV Pop Diaries, ALRIGHT NOW, Tyne Tees

6th April 1979 - 19th December 1980

Alright Now - Loosely named after the Free song, All Right Now, co-written by Middlesborough's Paul Rodgers. Where ATV's Revolver was set in a nightclub, Alright Now was set in a coffee bar, bringing back memories of much earlier shows like TWW's Discs-A-Gogo.

The host for the first series was Darts' singer Den Hegarty, who overacted and mugged it up to the camera when he really couldn't think of anything to say. Thankfully he would be replaced by guest presenters for the second series including Billy Connolly, Suzi Quatro, Bill Oddie, Mickie Most and Phil Lynott. In addition to the host here was a resident group of customers, referred to as the Krazy Koffee Bar Kidz, including future Top Of The Pops producer Chris Cowey.

The pilot show was recorded in January 1979 starring The Steve Gibbons Band, and it was considered successful enough for Tyne Tees to commission an eight part series. However, when they were shown was down to chance as some were broadcast on Fridays, while some were on Saturdays. It was not networked by ITV, but it would be shown by ATV in the summer and in November after the ITV strike had come to an end, from 5.15 -5.45 pm. Unusually they played the pilot edition with The Steve Gibbons Band, probably because they were from the Midlands.

Alright Now was a kind of sequel to The Geordie Scene, giving exposure to new and established acts from the north east of England, alongside acts from the rest of the country. Among the 'before they were famous' faces given early exposure were The Police, Penetration, Chris Rea and Dire Straits, all featuring people from the north-east. The musicians would also be questioned by the audience about their beliefs and stances on politics, while facts about the band's line-up were put up onscreen while they played live. Filmed reports would also play a part, ranging from punk fashion to why bands sometimes have to move away to make it big, if at all.

The Clash requested to play on the show as it had a live music only policy "you can plug in and play" claimed Joe Strummer, while Elvis Costello, Rockpile, Phil Lynott among others also took the train up to Newcastle to appear. The music policy was pretty much like The Old Grey Whistle Test and Revolver, with anyone from Rory Gallagher to new wavers invited up. The Only Ones' Another Girl Another Planet was used for the opening credit sequence which also featured the jukebox used in the café set design.

The show featured many Tyne Tees production names which would become more familiar and prominent in the eighties, Andrea Wonfor, Malcolm Gerrie, and director Gavin Taylor, all of whom would work later work on The Tube, as well as Chris Cowey.

Further proof of why sometimes you have to look outside of the metropolis to find workable ideas and presentation, and another example of why Tyne Tees was probably the best ITV channel when it came to this kind of thing.

Clash, Tom Robinson Band

The Clash open the show with English Civil War, which is followed by more footage of the Rentamob Punks from the first show being patronised further. The Clash are then subjected to Den's (and other Kaff Kids') interrogation techniques before the Tom Robinson Band take us into the break with All Right All Night; Part two opens with the Tom Robinson Band performing Bully For You (a single co-written by Peter Gabriel) and this is followed by another wacky interview in the Kaff; The Clash close the show with Hate And War and a unique version of the old Desmond Dekkar song Israelites.

The Israelites

Interesting because it is the only known recording Desmond Decker's hit, The Israelites.

It was played at Blackburn on the 13th July 78 for the soundcheck but no knonw recording of that exists.
