Hastings Pier Ballroom

The ballroom was located at the end of Hastings Pier and had a capacity of 2,000 people 2.

The ballroom became a popular music venue in the 1960s, hosting various concerts and events 2 4.

In 1990, the pier suffered major storm damage, which likely impacted the ballroom as well4.

The pier was closed to the public for a time before being completely shut down in 2008. A fire then destroyed the structure in 2010 4.

A rebuilding project was undertaken, and the pier reopened to the public in 2016. However, the search results do not indicate whether the ballroom was rebuilt as part of this renovation 4.

The redeveloped pier has won several awards, including the National Piers Society's "Pier of the Year" award in 2017 and the prestigious Stirling Prize for architecture in the same year 4.

THE CLASH & THE SLITS - HASTINGS PIER 21ST DECEMBER 1978

February 3, 2019 by Alan Esdaile

Cheryl White… What an amazing gig to have been at. I'm currently curating an exhibition about Poly Styrene. Does anyone have anything of X-Ray Spex on the pier?

Andy Gunton… I've no doubt you're already aware of this, but just in case, Poly is mentioned in this

Chris van Rock… I would love to see that exhibition about Poly. I have wrote my first novel ( the Zombies of St. Leonard's ) with a character based on her and a copy of the book has been sent to her daughter by her friend. I can deliver or post and all monies are for St Michael's Hospice in memory of Poly … the inspiration and memories of growing up with punk music

Chris van Rock… Interestingly the Slits played on 2 clash tours. Always a great band.

Paul Mingham… Took a charter coach there, it picked us up in Newhaven. Ride was fun, punk rock sing along all the way there! Great gig electric atmosphere. Oh to be 17 again!

Tim Brooder… How I wish I wasn't 7 at the time!

Paul Mingham - Took a charter coach there, it picked us up in Newhaven. Ride was fun, punk rock sing along all the way there! Great gig electric atmosphere. Oh to be 17 again!

Oh the memories. I saw The Clash on Hastings Pier, '78 I think. Right at the front, got it from band & crowd. Hair was a slimy mess

John Moore - My first concert! My older brother had to take me! I’m sure he was chuffed

got topper headons drum sticks

Elise Liversedge - Clash deffo - declined a lift back home with the band and got topper headons drum sticks Bands on Hastings Pier | Facebook

Graham Clark - I went to the next one, 78 or 79 Slits supported I think.. Bands on Hastings Pier | Facebook

Support Band. The 4th. Reich
& Mick Jones/Sigue Sigue Sputnick

DJ GREMLIN'S ROCKIN' STOMPERS | Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/

David McLean: Simon Bain has asked a question about the Clash on a thread below, so a great chance for me to repost on my favourite band of all time #3 Clash Hastings Pier 1978 (with The Slits and a band called The Innocents who I have no recollection of!))

Glenn O Neill Kane - Remember there was a dodgy band called 4th. Reich that night .

David McLean - They became Manufactured Romance, bit like X Ray Spex

Keith Hurley - When Sigue Sigue Sputnick played at the Alhambra they said they had a guy with a footswitch who would punch in all the echo effects as there were a certain number of repeats and I didn't know the songs. It turned out it was Mick Jones from the Clash who I spent a whole evening with behind the mixing desk. Such a nice guy and we talked about life ,family etc.etc. and he never mentioned the Clash. A thoroughly nice person who I feel priviledged to have met. The Clash were the best band of all time and their diverse styles covered every genre of music. A truly wonderful band who will never , never be replaced !!!!!

Mark Bowers - I was supporting that night!!! They [Sigue Sigue Sputnick] were called the Hot Dogs then. Mick Jones doing our sound is still the single greatest moment of my gigging life. Smoking splits with Mick Jones, Tony James and co after was pretty fucking cool too. I loved the Alhambra x

Keith Hurley - They [Sigue Sigue Sputnick] were called the Hot Dogs as it was a low key anonymous gig to try out new songs and gage reaction. Mark Bowers ...Did you do some Cure songs ?....a long time ago but I do remember the support bands collective jaws dropping when they saw Mick Jones. He didnt actually do the sound he inserted the echo effects into Sigue Sigue Sputnicks sound as they heavily relied on repeats and he started them with a foot switch then turned them off after the required number.

A great gig but lots of skinheads

DJ GREMLIN'S ROCKIN' STOMPERS | Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/

David McLean - The Clash, Hastings Pier 1978. Went to this one, lots of skinheads but still a good one.

Nick Cockell - That was a great gig but I remember they had metal barriers at the front which I'd never seen before at a punk gig. Probably so the skins couldn't get on stage! I went with Michael Livingston and some others & we tried to blag our way into the place where the bands were staying after for the party but they weren't having it so we spent the night on Hastings station buzzing away till the first train in the morning what a laugh

Ended up sleeping in a crypt of a deserted church

Glenn O Neill Kane - Ended up sleeping in a crypt of a deserted church with gremlin and a lot of skinheads after this but was worth it think was the best set I saw them do

David McLean - 1978 Clash on Hastings Pier, Slits supporting, both great, skinhead trouble not so great. https://www.facebook.com

Erik Gilbert - My first proper gig.

David McLean - I don't seem to have kept my stub for this gig. Clash at Hastings Pier 1978. Support was The Slits I think. Good gig but an eye had to be kept open for marauding skinheads. https://www.facebook.com/

Nick Cockell - That was a brilliant gig and it was Slits supporting. Pier isn't much good for gigs these days.....

Chris Boorman - Fantastic gig. https://facebook.com/

John Gale - Chris Boorman Was a great night.

Neville Swaysland - such a good night ,it was half the reason i moved to hastings https://facebook.com/

Glenn O Neill Kane - Was at that ,best clash gig I saw.

Neville Swaysland - I went with Madeleine D`Angelis , Simon Bain went as well

a guy at the front kept shouting at Joe Strummer "Strummer you sold out, you ****!" for signing to CBS

Fran Taylor - Ticket stub [139] picked up on my favourite tour of all! Roadying for the Slits on the Clash "Sort it out" tour - Oct '78 to Jan '79. Three months of pure bliss!! Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/

In 2006 I booked a long weekend in Hastings - I was in the hotel about five minutes when I realised it was the same one we had stayed in, in 1978, quite spooky!

Sadly the pier, like other old friends from that tour, is no longer with us and sadly missed.

— at Hastings Pier.

Steve Wright - I remember a guy at the front kept shouting at Joe Strummer "Strummer you sold out, you ****!" for signing to CBS. Slits were amazing.

Erik Gilbert - My goodness, this was my first gig! I had just turned 15. With The Slits if I recall. Not sure where the hell I managed to scrape together £2.25. My ears are still ringing. And I will never forget Ari’s opening comments about the toilet paper – rather thrilling for a 15 year old….

@paultinkley1964 - I was there
