David Myers - It’s a couple of centimetres longer than that I folded it to fit the frame years ago. But it is ok no damage, I need to get it reframed. Still the best gig ever. I got a Complete Control 7" signed on the same night in the dressing room after the gig.

Robbie Wilson - Went both so got then
David Myers - I went to both, got them signed, lost in transit. No idea where they are now. I had my ticket signed by them all as well, in fact most bands would let you in the dressing room after a gig at Victoria’s Hall, I had loads of signed tickets. I put them all together in a 12 vinyl sleeve and sadly I somehow lost them during a move in the late 80s.

Andy Machin offered this pair of original Clash tickets. Both are from the Victoria Hall in Hanley on the 29th of November 1978 & 1st of February 1980
Stefaan Delarue - mine, well used.
Victoria Hall, Hanley, Stoke
Victoria Hall in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent is a historic concert hall that opened in 1888 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee the previous year 1 2 3. The classical Grade II Listed building was constructed in local red brick and terracotta, originally holding 2,800 people 3.
The hall has hosted many famous conductors and performers over the years 2. The organ, which has four manuals and over 4,400 pipes, was originally built for the Yorkshire Royal Jubilee Exhibition in 1887 and later gifted to the hall by local businessman George Meakin24. It has undergone several rebuilds and renovations, most recently in 1998 by David Wells Organ Builders 4.
In 1999, an extension was added to the hall as part of the development of Hanley's Cultural Quarter, providing better facilities for audiences and performers 2. Today, the refurbished and extended Victoria Hall seats 1,467 people and is one of the most popular venues on the touring circuit, attracting big names in music and comedy 3.

David Proudlove - The Victoria Hall dates from 1888, and was the brainchild of the Borough Surveyor, J. Lobely. Built in local red brick and terracotta, the classical Grade II Listed venue originally held 2,800 people, and has, over the years been the scene of numerous concerts, wrestling contests, boxing matches, and many rock gigs. I can personally testify to the hall’s legendary acoustics, having witnessed two of the city’s great gigs of modern times there: Primal Scream in 1994 and Suede in 1995.
By the mid 1990s though, the building, along with its parent town, had become tired and run-down and in need of some serious attention. The City Council identified the Victoria Hall – which although in need of a revamp was still operating successfully as a touring venue – as the potential catalyst of a cultural resurgence. A planned revamp of the Victoria Hall, along with plans for a new theatre through the conversion of a stunning Art Deco cinema, and a raft of public realm improvements, formed the City Council’s ‘Cultural Quarter’ initiative. Levitt Bernstein were selected as architects for the scheme and produced a stunning adaptation and extension of this great building, providing first class new facilities. The new Victoria Hall opened its doors in 1998, and has since been able to exceed all of its visitor targets.
The Victoria Hall extension is considered by many to be a nationally important example of how to extend an historic building without resorting to pastiche, and is certainly the most important architectural work in Stoke-on-Trent for many years; unashamedly modern, yet traditional too in the way materials common to the area are utilised, though with a contemporary twist. The principle behind this approach to extending a building is not new, and the Victoria Hall extension follows a trend that was started by the Georgian extension of the timber-framed Ford Green Hall many years ago.
an amazing night
...the guy (mark) who runs the punk vinyl stall on Leek (saturday) & Newcastle under lyme markets, is attempting to retrive his tape of stoke 78 from a mate in essex. PS don't confuse mark with the white haired prog seller also on leek market
The 29th November '78 wasn't the Stoke Mandeville concert. '78 was with the Slits, was more rock, less anarchic, better musically, but I was a bit disappointed all the same (that isn't to say it was a bad concert, but compared to the first..). We weren't allowed backstage after the concert.
Joe insisted that everyone got in for £2,25 whether they were advance sales or not, threatening not to play otherwise.
(1) the gig line up was the clash slits and the innocents, viv and the rest of the slits came into the crowd to watch the clash autographs were given, when the clash arrived for the sound check, they also signed loads of stuff for the group of fans at the back door, which included me 14 years old and a clash fan then. (Nacro-Killer)
During the drum intro for Tommy Gun, Topper hit himself in the eye with a drumstick, so joe shouted "tommy gun!, with one eye!" (Tim)I was at the same gig, had an amazing night, fist of all Topper was playing so maically his drum stick snapped in half and I managed to get the top half that flew off...and then after the gig me and my mates managed to get in the dressing room, sitting on the floor with the band talking, they all signed my Sort It Out Tour poster, unbelievable! (Shaun) Howdy
Fans were allowed backstage at this gig - eventually
Excellent site - been checking you out for a few years now. Couple of bits of trivia regarding punter comments on 29/11/78 Hanley Victoria Hall.
Fans were allowed backstage at this gig - eventually. The reason for the delay was a scene being filmed for Rude Boy. The bit near the end where Mick lambasts Ray for is Racist quips. Clearly seen behind Mick is some graffiti stating "Stoke Punks rule" or similar.
Caroline Coon was floating about looking impossibly glamourous to a very impressionable 14 year old. Another very brief scene was shot and appears in rude Boy - the trashed dressing room (done previously by the Jam) where Joe is tuning his Tele.
Bruno Brooks later interviewed Topper and Paul which was broadcast on the Sunday following the gig and later issued unedited as a pic disc (featuring a later pic of Joe with mohican!!!)
I'd love to get in touch with the previous commenter 'nacro-killer' as I used to work for NACRO in the eighties and possibly know the individual. Do you have a forum? Rob Wild <rob.wild1[a]virgin.net>

Phil Sadler Mba - I was there! and remember they had to stop after a couple of songs because Topper broke a drum stick which shattered and part of it went in his eye.
The best live band - ever.
Mark Rawlins - I was there and remember it well. The second time The Clash played in Hanley. I skived school and spent the day in Hanley hoping to get in for the sound check. Didn't, but did meet the band before the gig. This was soon after Give Em Enough Rope was released, I remember they opened with Safe European Home. The best live band - ever.
