Huddersfield Daily Examiner, Clash come to Yorkshire

Saturday 18 November 1978

Clash come to Yorkshire

THEY are the band you will never see on Top Of The Pops But you can see them live tonight or tomorrow night.

The Clash are on tour again playing Leeds University this evening and Sheffield Top Rank tomorrow .

And as usual they have given their 23-gig nationwide trip an unusual name Previously they have been part of the Anarchy tour of 1976 and headlined the White Riot (1977) and Clash Out On Parole (1978) tours This time round it is the Clash Sort It Out Tour.

It's purpose is to see the fans in the provinces and to promote the new album “Give ’Em Enough Rope”.

Clash formed in May 1976 Joe Strummer Mick Jones Paul Simonon and Topper Headon attracted record company attention from the start and CBS signed them and put them in a studio where they produce their first album in three weekends.

They also refused to appear on Top Of The Pops something which few other rock bands have ever done declaring it to be an old pop show left over from the Sixties.

And while other new -wave and punk bands have fallen by the wayside Clash have grown in stature since then The title of their new album may seem to be tempting providence- but Clash have never been afraid of doing that.

The Clash Fully Autographed 1978 Hotel Rooming List, With Roger Epperson Letter of Authenticity

Link

A 1978 hotel rooming list for The Clash, signed by Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Nicky (Topper) Headon.

This list, with hotel room numbers and room types for band members and crew, dates from The Clashís stay at the Merrion Hotel in Leeds, England for their November 18, 1978 show at Leeds University, as part of their Sort It Out Tour (their second album, Give Em Enough Rope, had been released only eight days before this concert). Apparently a member of the road crew gave a fan this list so he could use it for the bandís autographs. Note that Joe Strummer has scratched out his room number, to avoid unwanted visitors.

The signatures have been authenticated by music autograph expert Roger Epperson, whoís Certificate of Authenticity is included, as is Recordmeccaís written lifetime guarantee of authenticity. 6 1/2″ x 8 1/2″. In excellent condition, with three flattened horizontal creases and one vertical one.

Entry stewards

Nicky Bettany - I was there too. One of my first student concerts. Went on to do stewarding. Great times. Proper musical education

Steve Southall - I was an Ents Steward from 1977 to 1980 and it really was the golden age of gig going. The musical history of the "Refect" is nicely commemorated around the walls with a poster for each (academic) year listing the gigs. Here's 1977-78 showing how music was changing.

Our Freshers gig was Camel and we all dutifully sat cross-legged on the floor to listen to some Prog Rock. Some of us were still awake at the end. Things got better as the academic year progressed and pretty soon the Refect was a sweaty mass of pogoing students and locals thanks to the Clash, the Jam and many others. Gang of Four made their first appearance in March 1978 (after many gigs in the Student Union).

Martin Hanson - I was there, first term of Ents stewarding. No little cards in 78 but I have got an A4 Leeds Univents flyer:

University of Leeds

The University's Refectory is a 2,100-capacity music venue located on the University's main campus in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. 2 11 The Refectory has a rich history of hosting notable performers, including The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, and Thin Lizzy 2.

The University of Leeds Refectory is part of the larger university campus, which includes several significant buildings. One of these is the Great Hall, a Grade II listed Gothic Revival building designed by Alfred Waterhouse R.A. and completed in 1894 3. The Great Hall is primarily used for formal occasions such as graduation ceremonies and university meetings 3. The Refectory, in the mid-20th century, operated as the university's main canteen 2.  The University of Leeds campus is still in existence and continues to host a variety of events and performances 9.

The Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall, part of the School of Music, is a stunning venue perfect for performances and conferences 1. It underwent a £1.4million refurbishment and now features state-of-the-art technical facilities 1. Images of this concert hall can be found on various websites 1, 2, 3, 4,

Redemption Song - Leeds

by Chris Salewicz

"At the University of Leeds, just up the road from Sheffield, the social secretary was a student named Andy Kershaw. “I put on the Clash twice at Leeds University,” he told me. “In January 1980 on the London Calling 16 Tons tour they were the most exciting, fully rounded rock ’n’ roll group I have ever seen. The initial scratchy fury of the Clash had become something admirable and absolutely stunning. They’d paid heed to their roots— Mick with his encyclopedic knowledge of pop music, Paul who was steeped in reggae, and Joe with his love of r&b—and combined them with an incredible proficiency at playing. By this time they could play so well, and also looked so fantastic. The Clash had an élan I’ve seen in no other rock ’n’ roll group."
