Edinburgh Odeon

The Odeon closed on August 30, 2003 and remained shuttered, apart from a temporary reopening as a live venue during the Edinburgh Festival.[1] In 2013, Gerry Boyle (brother of singer Susan Boyle) took over the building and converted it into a live performance venue called The Instant Arena.[1] However, the main auditorium closed within weeks.[1]

In November 2015, the empty building was purchased by Stefan King of the G1 Group, who operate other cinemas in Edinburgh and Perth.[1] The future use of the former Odeon was not disclosed at the time.[1]

The Odeon cinema was designated as a Grade B Listed building by Historic Scotland in 1974, and was later upgraded to a Grade A Listed building in 2012.[1] It is currently listed on the Buildings At Risk Register.[1]

In November 2022, it was announced that the Scotsman Group (formerly the G1 Group) run by Stephan King, are proposing to reopen the former Odeon as a 5-screen cinema.[1]

All the seats got flattened

David Farrer - All the seats got flattened

DJ Dolphin Boy, aka Andy Levy, has been a producer and DJ for more than 20 years. What was your favourite ever gig as an audience member? The Clash at the Edinburgh Odeon in 1978. It was my first gig. Q&A: Dolphin Boy – The Soundhouse Organisation

Marion - I was at the legendary November 1978 Clash gig having a riot with all the Rebel Edinburgh Punk Rockers. Fantastic memories

I was the Slits roadie

Fran Taylor - That was the night The Slits joined the tour, I was their roadie. Joyous times right through to January 1979!

Jim Kelly - I was at this gig, blistering Met the Clash after the gig!

Joe opened the window and let about half a dozen of us in

  • Dougie Dow - I was there and got into the backstage as Joe opened the window and let about half a dozen of us in.brill night and gig

David Carruthers - Was at that concert

  • the 'bouncers' all wore bow ties

  • David Campbell - Yeh, I was there on top of the smashed seats, saw them again at Glasgow Barrowlands, what a band!

  • my ears rang for days

  • Harris Morrison - I was there.........front rows of seats got destroyed and for some reason remember that the 'bouncers' all wore bow ties (I know why but still looked funny).

  • Graham Macindoe - The Clash & The Slits, Edinburgh 1978. I was so close to the speakers my ears rang for days. Graham Macindoe | Facebook
