poor audience recording
The only recording in circulation is a poor audience recording, a good few generations off the master (though a small improvement on an earlier copy).
There is a lack of clarity and distortion throughout. Vocals are very distant and to poor to hear Joe’s adlibs etc. Bass is buried somewhat and drums are distant. Lead guitar though comes through best and makes this an enjoyable listen, just.
Record Mirror: One off for Clash
I was one of the 1500 very disapointed fans.
ONCE IN 78’: THE CLASH are on strike against radio in Britain.
"September 9, 1978: THE CLASH are on strike against radio in Britian. As petulant as it sounds, it's true. The band are are on strike against UK radio for not playing their records enough. To punish the offending stations they have canceled their concert for the Harlesden Roxy tonight, leaving fifteen hundred fans mad after traveling long distances to see the band.
Manager Bernard Rhodes said "We never let our fans down. We're postponing this show, not canceling it. We're coming up with something great for the fans."
On the other hand the Roxy's manager was said to have understood that two of the band members were still back in the US working on their upcoming LP, making the concert impossible. Rhodes countered that the band went on strike while they were working on the album in the US and should have the "strike" settled by the 23rd. How this cancellation will affect the amount of airplay that Clash records are given by UK radio was not made clear. But again, it could just be a publicity stunt gone awry."

To shirty give-away
Has anyone else got one of these? It's slightly yellowed now, being 41 years old.
I had a ticket to see The Clash in the Harlesden Roxy in 1978, but the gig was cancelled (can't remember why, I'm sure someone will know why) and when we arrived for the rearranged gig on 25th October, we were all handed this t shirt as an apology!!
Being from N. Wales, I had to take a couple of days off work to attend and consequently lost my (crappy) job. No loss at all - it was an amazing gig and I think it was the fourth time I'd seen them. My gig tickets are in the loft somewhere, but I'll dig them out soon.
“Tommy Gun” T-shirt given out at the Harlesden Roxy
“Tommy Gun” T-shirt given out at the Harlesden Roxy on 25th/26th October 1978 on The Clash “Sort It Out” tour. The gig had been originally scheduled to run in September but was cancelled over concerns about audience size and removal of seats. Following negotiations between [shortly to be replaced] manager Bernie Rhodes, the GLC and the theatre’s management the replacement dates went ahead the following month and the T-shirts were handed out on the evening as a gesture of goodwill. An abiding memory of an otherwise great gig is dragging my dazed and confused cousin away from the front after a skinhead took an evident dislike to him and really belted him over the back of the head.
Martin Trakker - Yes I was at that gig, sadly the t shirt was lost somewhere in the washing machines of the past
Martin Jones - Yes, I was there and got one of the t-shirts as well. Two many tickets were sold and so it breached the fire safety regulations, so it has to be cancelled and spread over two nights. Talking to Mick outside and he through his fag butt on the floor and stamped on my foot. I bumped into him in Covent Garden a few years ago and reminded him and he said sorry!
Peter Morgan - Gig was cancelled /postponed because Joe & Mick were still in New York doing the mix for Give Them Enough Rope (Keith Topping - The Complete Clash). Fair play to you for travelling down
Christine Rowlands - The Clash in the Harlesden Roxy in 1978, but the gig was cancelled (can't remember why, I'm sure someone will know why) and when we arrived for the rearranged gig on 25th October, we were all handed this t shirt as an apology!!
Being from N. Wales, I had to take a couple of days off work to attend and consequently lost my (crappy) job. No loss at all - it was an amazing gig and I think it was the fourth time I'd seen them.
Michael Smith - I was there - if I remember rightly it got rearranged several times before it took place. It was a great gig
David McLean - A bit of personal nostalgia. When I went to see The Clash at Harlesden Roxy in 1978 we got there so early that we caught The Clash coming out of their sound check. They were giving out autographs and all I had on me was an old chip wrapper!

The Harlesden Roxy
This is the first of two rearranged gigs that finally took place following a variety of problems (NME 7 Oct gig preview Chris Salewicz)
Bernie Rhodes announced this gig originally without Joe and Mickâs knowledge whilst they were still in the USA with Sandy Pearlman, it was to be the final nail in his managerial coffin. Bernieâs disputed, but undeniably significant role in The Clash history, would later resume again some 2 years later, but for now the band were enjoying their freedom.
The Harlesden Roxy (previously the Coliseum - not to be confused with the Roxy Club in Londonâs trendy Covent Garden) is an old converted cinema in a deprived area of northwest London (adjacent to the notorious Stonebridge Estate).
The gig was reviewed by Eric Fuller in Sounds and the impenetrable tosser Ian Penman. Both were highly critical and represented the end of the UK music business hype for The Clash. Although various writers would continue to write objectively and appreciatively of The Clash, this was the end of the blanket, often â˜over the topâ, praise that had suited the music press since punk had caused such a wave of panic amongst its largely hippy progressive rock writers.
Postponed on the 9th September, resheduled date of September 25th postponed and also further resheduled date of 14th October postponed. New GLC restrictions limited tickets to 900, so a second night scheduled for the other 700.
Whirlwind supported. I do not know about the 26.10.78. Free t-shirts (Tommy Gun) given to audience for being messed around previously. I have two. Colin
another strong performance
It’s another strong performance though of course with the band keen to put on a good show after unwillingly disappointing fans that had travelled to the earlier cancelled dates.
The set is the same as for the European mini-tour and so Complete Control is still the opener with What’s My Name a welcome addition. The set was significantly changed two weeks later for the UK leg of the Sort It Out Tour.
Garageland has an edit that loses the majority of the song and the recording ends with the crowd still shouting for more after White Riot.

NME recruit Ian Penman had already signalled his refusal to join the inkier' chorus of adoration for the Clash
Route 19 Revisited: The Clash and London Calling
books.google.co.uk
Recent NME recruit Ian Penman had already signalled his refusal to join the inkier' chorus of adoration for the Clash in October 1978, when he reviewed a show at the Harlesden Roxy thus: 'A joyless, emotionless, directionless, self-important music, something like a shambolic HM quartet converted to Mao minutes before a show, but still retaining the original ego-pushy set, swaggers and all . . . The Clash don't know what to do with themselves, don't know what to do with rock music, but I and you know what it's doing to them.' If it had been spiteful and wide of the mark, it wouldn't have hurt so much.

I'D CALLED Mick Jones last Friday night The parsimonious Bernie Rhodes - who, though a repIacement manager has yet to be found (and it is most likely neither Billy Gaff nor Brian Lane), appears to be regarded most firmly as the band's ex - wouldn't give me tickets for last Saturday's Clash Roxy date, said CBS....

if all that you're singing when emerging from a Clash gig is hge praises of a British brew-up then something somewhere has gone markedly wrong. Maybe it was all that postponing and rebooking of dates, maybe the bad sound quality....

WEAPONS EXIST, but some people can't see them for looking. Bumped into Pete Wylie outside
Tom Halpin - I went to both nights at Roxy,Harlesden,I did have 2 Tommygun T-Shirts,Sadly long gone now,Cheers Tom.
JoJo Smith - I was there! Bumped into Pete Wylie outside and got my free Tommy Gun t-shirt. The gig was magnificent.
Nagu Sittampalam - I think this the one I went to. If I am right then Whirlwind were supporting them because Specials who were supporting them on the rest of the tour could not make the Harlesdon Roxy one.
Beaten up on the tube on the way for ‘being punks’
Adrian Peter Sprinks - My mate Keith and I had tickets for this but we’re beaten up on the tube on the way for ‘being punks’. We never got to the gig.
Stan Fus - Delighted to have attended
Peter Barry - My brother and me went with clash( Paul ) and Ziggy….I still remember Tommy Gun
I was barely 15. How cool did I feel at school after that.
Simon W - The first time I met Joe? Outside the Harlesden Roxy. Remember the night in (was it?) 1978 when the gig was pulled at the last minute?. The band and Caroline Coon turned up… autographs which I still have, chatted about the forthcoming second album… Joe and a few of us went and bought chips, I swear!!! I was barely 15. Blackmarketclash | Leave a comment
The Clash at the The Roxy, Harlesden in London, 1978
Sunday 26th, Joe Strummer and the "ill advised" H Block t-shirt
Stuart Bailie - The Undertones had planned an open air festival in Derry in the summer of 1979, booking The Clash and The Damned. However The Clash’s singer, Joe Strummer, received a letter, apparently from the Red Hand Commandos in Derry, which threatened to assassinate him if he set foot in Derry. The reason was that Strummer had endorsed the Troops Out movement in a New Musical Express feature.
“We were so naive,” Bradley remembers, “that we said, this concert’s in Shantallow, so the Red Hand Commandos will not come there. We realise now, it was a very parochial thing to say. But it wouldn’t wash with them. It brought home to Joe that it’s OK posing in the NME with an H Block T shirt, but when you come to Northern Ireland, people will take grave offence and may wish to injure you.”

If you are sitting comfortably.. then I’ll begin....
I’m 15 years big and have tickets to see The Clash
So.. here’s the story if I remember all the details correctly. October 1978, I’m 15 years big and have tickets to see The Clash at the Harlesden Roxy just before the release of their second studio album ‘Give em enough Rope’. Me, my brothers Mick & Martin, Graham Hibbert and Terry Hibbert have gone to the gig in Graham’s superb Ford Cortina MkII 1600E (more about that later)
there’s been a cock up with too many tickets sold
Everyone is outside and there’s been a cock up with too many tickets sold and the gig is cancelled with two gigs being rearranged for a later date.
Amazingly the whole band turn up and are chatting and signing autographs on the street outside. Yours truly is quick to take advantage of the situation and gets all the bands signatures.
I am a few days later, technical drawing lesson in school reading the following issue of New Musical Express
Fast forward.. There I am a few days later, technical drawing lesson in school reading the following issue of New Musical Express. Always liked looking at the inside back page ‘T-ZERS’ articles and spotted this picture.. and thought ‘that kid looks familiar’. Well I just about fell off my chair realizing IT WAS ME at the point when Mick Jones was signing his autograph for me.. AND the photo was taken by the legendary Pennie Smith. MADE UP OR WHAT
