The memory of that night is seared into my whole being

David Portch - I was at the Torquay gig following night. Had the poster and the badge, sadly both long gone now, but the memory of that night is seared into my whole being.

Micky Pink - I went to the Torquay Town Hall show on 10th July - we had just left school and went on a summer break to Paignton nearby. Bought tickets at a local record shop, and after the show chatted to all the band before heading back to Torquay railway station to sleep in the waiting room. Brilliant memories

Mark Rowden - Torquay Town Hall

I was at the gig ...

Dave: I was at the gig and just wanted to add that before the gig there was a problem opening up the doors for some reason. There was a chant if we want the Clash, all quite chilled, then the Police turned up, on horses!

I don? t remember much of the gig, Coventry Automatics were ok, Suicide were amazing (this is hindsight cause the 16 year old me  didn? t get them then).

All I remember of the Clash is non stop dancing. Blew me away. Hot,sweaty, and mind blowing. And they were tight. Really tight. Still the best gig I have ever seen.

Saw them a few times in later years.

Cheers, Dave Portch daveportch@hotmail.com

life changing gig...

James Julian Ashford - Torquay town Hall, Monday July 10th '78.….first of many Clash gigs. Coventry Specials and Suicide supporting...life changing gig...

David Portch - I was at this one. Got two badges and a poster, long gone though!! Great night.

The Clash changed my life

Massimo Prudente - I was there, my English teacher gave me the ticket and told me it was a big deal. It was a very special gift, The Clash changed my life

A (Clash?) tape of them in Torquay

Martin Hall - I was there

Matthew North - Martin Hall - Havent you got a tape of them in torquay ?

Matthew North - I thought you did

Martin Johnson - I may have it in the loft mate . . . .

The only person there not chucking stuff at Suicide

Music | The Guardian | Davey White |  The Guardian
(
Alan Vega, Suicide frontman and electronic music pioneer, dies aged 78)

Saw Suicide supporting the Clash in Torquay in 1978 when I might have been the only person there not chucking stuff at them.

Martin Johnson - Not another!!! I saw Suicide support The Clash and The Specials at Torquay Town Hall in '78/79 and they got a really bad reception, (partly due to ignorance and partly due to the awful acoustics in the venue).

I wasn't sure what to make of them at the time but I did appreciate their total disregard for the "norm" which is what "punk rock" was meant to be about and admired their spirit which I felt later in seeing bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain. RIP a true innovator. Martin Johnson - Not another! | Facebook

Searching For The Young Joe Rebel - Punk Rock - Part 3

Joe Swinford / Joe Swinford | Facebook

My first Clash show was at Torquay Town Hall in mid 1978 as part of the Clash On Parole Tour (see pic below). Memory is hazy, but I do remember it was a life-changing show.

After watching all these piss poor third division bands, The Clash were a revelation.

Strummer was sporting his Rebel Truce shirt, and Mick Jones looked more like Keef than Keef did at that time. I'd traveled down to Torquay from Exeter with a car load of local punks (and hangers on), who were very excitable and boisterous. One of 'em, who we will call Roy, cut his hands open attempting to swing from an old bus shelter! ... Read more below
