Clash on Parole Tour
Supported by The Specials & Suicide

Audio

full audience - poor - Sound 1.5 - 65min - unknown gen - 20 tracks

07 Clash City Rockers

Sound quality

The best recording in circulation has some clarity and range but is a raw audience tape suffering from distance and distortion. It’s on a par with the Manchester Apollo bootleg of 3 nights earlier.

Guitar comes through OK, bass is buried but there, drums and vocals distant but not bad. Joe’s rhythm guitar can just be made out.

It’s at least several generations up from the master so an upgrade may yet surface. An enjoyable listen though for the performance and the atmosphere, which is captured quite well.

Rude Boy DVD

Quality 5 - 3min - mast - 1 track [The Prisoner which runs into the opening chords of White Riot]

Rude Boy footage

The gig, filmed partially by Mingay and Hazan for Rude Boy features the ‘The Prisoner’ which fades into White Riot, as the director wanted footage of The Prisoner to use along with footage from the Glasgow Apollo. Fans locked up at Glasgow with Joe & Paul had sung choruses of the Prisoner.

The clip from the Prisoner track which appears in the film, has Mick trying to stop fighting in the audience, which actually took place during Capital Radio and which has been cleverly edited in the directors prefered place. Capital Radio may possible exist thus?

Aberdeen Music Hall

A complete contrast to the previous night. In Glasgow the band were largely powerless to stop the notorious Apollo bouncers beating the shit out of their fans. Here they are playing at the extremely grand Aberdeen Music Hall.

The Aberdeen Music Hall is a grandueresque civic building owned by the City Council which is still in use today.

It is located on Union Street in the city center of Aberdeen, Scotland, has been a significant concert venue since the 1850s. It has a rich history of hosting various artists, including David Bowie, Emeli Sand, Led Zeppelin, and many others[1].

The venue, with a seating capacity of 1,281, is known for its diverse range of events, including concerts, comedy, variety shows, exhibitions, and art and craft fairs.

The Aberdeen Music Hall, a historic venue located in Aberdeen, Scotland, has recently undergone a significant upgrade to enhance†its facilities and accessibility. Completed in December 2018, the transformation was part of a £9 million refurbishment program led by BDP, a major design practice

another great performance

It would not have been surprising if this performance had been subdued after the events from the night before but this is another great performance.

As well as being memorable for the rarish appearance of The Prisoner [at the behest of the directors?] Joe’s intro “Some of us spent last night in jail, this a song called I don’t wanna be the prisoner”, it’s the first recording in effect of Capital Radio II as Mick adds the gentle guitar intro before blasting into the song proper.

English Civil War is a further highlight with Joe saying, “all get out your songbooks and turn to page 29!” The audience get the usual tour 3 song encore ending with the chaotic White Riot.

they played a blistering set

This was the night of the infamous Glasgow Apollo gig it was also a Tuesday. I saw them the next day in Aberdeen where they played a blistering set.

It's funny i can remember it as clear as day yet theres things from last week that ive completely forgot. They had this big stage backdrop with a picture of a Mechersmitd it fell downon Topper halfway through the set .Some of Rude Boy was filmed there but i dont think they got that one.

  • No one since even comes close to the clash

  • Graeme Wilson - My Ticket from that night c/w signed flyer & badge Strummer wore during the gig & gave to me backstage.

  • Tom Eadie - I seen them in Aberdeen on same tour.was same for me no one since even comes close.

George Scully - I saw The Clash on June 5th 1978.They played Aberdeen Music Hall.Quite a violent gig, what with the English/London punk lads and lassies trying to push their luck up here. They, the English punks that is,failed miserably, as they got a good kicking from the local Aberdeen lads. And no,I wasn`t involved,as I was 11 years old at the time and still at primary school.

  • Ian Philip - Saw them the night after at Aberdeen Music Hall! (Coventry) Specials and Suicide were support. Great memories!

  • Angy Munro - Saw them in Aberdeen '78 but view not nearly as good.

This week something a little bit different. A couple of previously unseen photos of two absolute punk legends: Joe Strummer of The Clash and Ari Up of The Slits sent in by Les Clark, who rather modestly claims that: ‘These are not photographs, just snapshots of time - leave the photos to the professionals.’
