Sound 5 - 13min - 1gen - 4 tracks
complete songs audio only. Contains various tracks from across the Tour

Rude Boy DVD

Quality 5 - 13min - mast - 4 tracks
edited songs but with video

Only the four tracks on the DVD/video are known but these are edited. Famous for the bouncers beating up the punters which features in the Rude Boy film with re-enacted footage. However this interupts the live shots, both sound and video.

There's quite a bit of footage of fans outside.

Mingay and Hazan have often said that they restricted the footage they took to particular songs due to the high price of film. The DVD release only brought one new track out of the archives, White Riot at Aberdeen, though the Prisoner is rumoured to have been shot at Glasgow and it was unsatisfactory, hence the trip to Aberdeen were it features in the film.

It was the aggressive doormen which subsequently led to Joe and Paul's arrest overnight in Glasgow nick following a fraca outside after.

The promo cassette though has full unedited versions. It is also featured extensively in Bob Gruens book for its famous high stage.

A Riot of Our Own pg89

Another extensively chronicled night in Johnny Greens book. The bouncers beating up the fans was re-enacted for the film Rude Boy.

Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon were subsequently arrested for being drunk and disorderly after a gig at the Apollo in Glasgow, both were fined

Glasgow Apollo

From 1927 to 1985 the Glasgow Apollo was a landmark in Glasgow's architecture and culture. It opened as Green's Playhouse in 1927 and was built as a showpiece palace in the great era of live entertainment. It was a giant and elaborate building capable of seating up to 4,500 people. During these early days the cinema, ballroom, cafes and vestibules could cater for 10,000 people; incredible even by the standards of today's multiplexes. It was renowned before the Apollo era as a unique experience, and the rock'n'roll years only added to its fame.

In 1973 after the curtain was finally brought down on the Green's Playhouse and following a low budget "Changing Rooms" style makeover, The Glasgow Apollo was officially opened. The first ever gig at the Apollo was Johnny Cash. A few months later it was the Rolling Stones debut at the Apollo.

The Clash first played the Apollo in October 1977, returning in July 1978 just days before the venue's owner, Mecca, announced plans to convert the auditorium into a bingo hall. Apparently the Clash were told that their show was to be the last at the Apollo.

The infamous Apollo bouncers were going to get revenge on the Glasgow crowd for making their life hell over the years. The Clash played in a very tense atmosphere and found themselves asking the crowd and the bouncers to stop fighting on numerous occasions. The mayhem in the Apollo was filmed for Rude Boy and Joe and Paul were arrested for being drunk and disorderly after the gig. Rude Boy features fans of The Clash blocking the streets outside the Apollo before the 1978 gig.

The website www.inthewilderness.com provides some great stories about the bouncers including one when the bouncers met their match in the form of an unexpectedly violent source - David Soul's 13 year old teenybopper fans! Their screaming, hysterical crying, punching, kicking and spitting led to police eventually being deployed to keep them off the stage. The bouncers hid from the girls behind the thin blue line!

The Anti-Nowhere League had to do a runner after being annoyed at spitting tried to spit back on the audience but hitting the bouncers instead!Tears were shed for what looked like being the Apollo's swansong.  But a big campaign by fans got underway immediately.  Petitions were drawn up.  Debates were carried on through council chambers and newspaper columns.

As a resultMecca had to change plan and 1978 became one of the best years in the Apollo's history. Tom Robinson and SLF reopened the Apollo on 29 September.

The building was in rapid decline in its last decade, the plaster, bricks and mortar rotted to dangerous degrees and was finally demolished in 1989.

Glasgow Apollo

The Glasgow Apollo Theatre, located at 126 Renfield Street in Glasgow city centre, Scotland, was a premier music venue from its opening on September 5, 1973, until its closure on June 16, 1985.

The venue was originally known as Green's Playhouse, a massive cinema thought to be the largest in Europe at the time of its opening. As the cinema declined, the building was rebranded as The Apollo by Unicorn Leisure, owned by Frank Lynch and Max Langdown

The Apollo was designed by architect John Fairweather in a style that accommodated both cinema and live performances. The building's capacity was 3,500, making it a significant venue for large-scale events in Glasgow.

The Apollo was demolished in September 1987, a couple of years after its closure. Despite its physical absence, the venue remains a cherished memory for many music fans and has been commemorated through websites like glasgowapollo.com, which has received over 12 million hits as of 2017. The site aims to create a definitive list of all the bands that played at the Apollo and provides a platform for sharing memories, ticket stubs, and setlists.

The Glasgow Apollo Theatre was a significant cultural landmark in Glasgow's music history. Although the building no longer stands, its legacy lives on through the memories of those who experienced its concerts and through the efforts of websites dedicated to preserving its history.

20 gigs that will live forever in Scotland as we mark 20 years since Oasis at Balloch Park

TO mark the 20th anniversary of the legendary Loch Lomond shows, Record Music Editor John Dingwall, looks back on some of Scotland's most memorable gigs.

The Clash at Glasgow Apollo
I caught a the band’s incendiary shows at the legendary Glasgow Apollo on more than one occasion and popped backstage to conduct an early interview after a concert in 1981.

But it was after their gig on July 4, 1978, that The Clash fought the law.

Guitaris Mick Jones recently told The Record: “Joe was upset about the way the gig had gone because the bouncers had been beating people up.

Best gig ever

Euan Straiton - my first gig ever was at the old Glasgow Apollo the night before The Clash

Derek Louden - I was at the Glasgow gig on this tour! Best gig ever.

Adam Jones - I remember it well great gig

Mick Clements - My first ‘proper’ gig. Never bettered

still the best gigs ever, and I've seen a loads

Davie Davidson - i first seen the Clash (only band that matters) the same year at Glasgow Apollo, the were the first band i found for myself as i was listening to my older bros stuff ie Alex Harvey band floyd led zep ect, then the Clash album came out and i was hooked, i stood in a que outside listen music shop in Glasgow the day it came out, as i did with every other Clash album after, altho i only got to see them 3 times twice Apollo 78/79 and Brixton academy 1982.....still the best gigs ever, and I've seen a loads.

The Clash Official | Facebook - The Clash gigs we went to in '77 & '78 were memorable to put it mildly

A bouncer hit me with some club and I had broken ribs

Pete Shells - I just read a great comment from a guy who was at the Glasgow Apollo gig in 1978 as featured in Rude Boy... A bouncer hit me with some club and I had broken ribs. My mum didn’t know I was there so I had to hide it then say it happened playing football . I was about 15. The Clash Official | Facebook

John Macmillan- Think this was my 3rd concert at the Apollo. I'm pretty sure the Specials got booed off. A lot of the Rude Boy footage filmed that night. Yes I remember the GTF tee shirt. I was about 15

George Mcneil - 1 of best concerts , i went to, fantastic night

John Duffy - My first gig

Christopher John Coakley - I was there, an American on a solo bicycle tour at my first Punk Rock concert. What an epic night.

We slept in a heap of punks in Glasgow central door way

Gordon Hunter - Was there .seems like yesterday. Punk made me who I am. We slept in a heap of punks in Glasgow central door way. You were allowed Tae dae that in they days. 1 of best concerts , i went to, fantastic night

Bluffed way in as a 15 year old

Norman Jeffrey - Bluffed way in as a 15 year old

Greig Scott - What a night that was !!!!! 4th July 78 with Suicide and the Coventry Specials. A riot in the streets outside and Joe and Paul got arrested …… The Clash in their prime. What. A. Night.

Colin Regan - Bobby Gillespie talks about the gig in his excellent book "tenement kid"...

Andy Unger - I was there, Joe was drunk/ totally out of it during the day, The Clash were pish (the footage in the movie is - quite significantly- overdubbed) Suicide were amazing. The atmosphere was dreadful. The bouncers were, as always, total arseholes. Horrible human beings. My memory of the event has faded somewhat over the years but I totally agree with you about the atmosphere. I was several rows further back and didn't have a clear view of what was going on. I heard more about it from people in the days following. There's no disputing that the bouncers were thugs given license to behave however they wanted. As for Suicide, they got a roasting yeah? This happened to them at the majority of the gigs. I think audiences psyched up to see The Clash simply weren't prepared to tolerate an act like Suicide. I know what Joe was trying to achieve with his choice of support acts but audiences clearly didn't understand that at the time.

Debbie Flood - I was there and actually still have the original poster from the gig framed .

Allan Martin - Debbie Flood I caught one of Topper's drumsticks. Had it for years. My Dad used it for stirring paint!!!

"simmer down, control your temper"

llan Martin - I was there, aged 15. - Strummer telling the audience to "simmer down, control your temper" Jones "screaming stop fighting" - Next song 1234....... White Riot - Mayhem resumes with added fervour

Mark Ewing - I was at the Glasgow Apollo that night. Best gig I’ve ever been to.

Phil Mann - Two lifted in Glasgow that night, but were released for Aberdeen gig next night, was humping gear for them

Meg Stevenson Scobbie - My husband was at that gig

Ken Graham - I was there

Lesley Foran - I was there amazing gig

Frank Campbell - I was there. Cracking night

Paul Stanley - CLASH July 78 queuing for a bit of history

Dorothy Plant - Was there with my friend Sandra

Francis David Rafferty - Great gig. Spent much of the afternoon and early evening in the company of Alan Vega & Marty Rev( Suicide) who were incredible, met them again a few times, over the years, at gigs elsewhere and they always remembered me from that day, that gig. They were fuckin' awesome. The insane hostility shown to them by much of the crowd, only added to the drama and magic of their performance.

Arthur Shand - Suicide and the Coventry Special AKA just 16 1st gig

Ricky Morton - That was a good gig. - Thought it might have got wilder than it did.

James Ferns - a took a sickie fae school the nex day

I was a roadie that night for the support band The Zones

Jo Caldwell - I was a roadie that night for the support band The Zones ( Slik )

Corrina Rea - The best gig ever electric from start to finish

mental outside after the gig finished

Greig Scott - 4th of July 1978 ........ mental outside after the gig finished. Suicide and (Coventry) Specials supported. Great night

John Saunders - Was at that concert memorable

Andrew Burns - I was at this gig.

Craig Platt - Brill gig clash Live. Had the pleasure of meeting them after a gig in Dundee thanks to our pal elliot who was doing a fanzine later to become manager of wet wet wet

Derek Louden - Best gig I’ve ever seen!

Alan Busby - great gig

What a night it was

Joseph Liam Lennon - What a night it was

Colin Campbell - I think that might have been the one I left before the Clash played! They were very late and the place was going bersek! Might have been a year or 2 earlier, I’m not sure. Richard Hell and the Voidoids were the support on the occasion I’m remembering. Leaving early a big regret to this day!

Derek Barker - I was certainly at the one with Richard Hell and the Voidoids. I can't remember if that was the one where I only saw two Clash tracks before having to go for the last train. And I can't remember if it was also the Clash, later, when we decided just to miss the train. We were let onto a train in Central to rest overnight, it was freezing.

Upper balcony was bouncing !

Scot Gartshore - Upper balcony was bouncing !

Ron Williamson - I was there

I got chucked out! Bouncers were K

Robert Orr - I got chucked out! Bouncers were K.,.

James Little - My big mate Jim McGowan got bounced out...aye they were heavy handed as they usually are in Glasgow...hey mister leave me alone comes to mind loved the concert though.

Irene Taylor - White. Riot was there x

Andrew Nimmo - That was a great night but the two nights running was special

Del Taylor - I was there. Suicide were one fking bag of shite .

Jim Mitchell - I was there, got my ticket still

Robert Tarrier - I was there

Best gig ever, Awesome night

James Davidson - Best gig ever , pure riot and energy levels went through the roof

Kieran Grant - Was my first gig, saw them at Appollo Glasgow support to the Clash.. - Awesome night

I worked with Dave Black on the lights

Hi, Great website. I worked on the parole tour as a lighting tech. Im glad you noticed a couple of gigs that never actually happened, even although on one website punters claim to have been at the gigs.

My name is Howard Mattinson and I worked with Dave Black on lights, Ian ( Dave's brother and David Jacobson were sound techs). There are bits of video on Youtube of us working both at Glasgow Apollo and the Music Machine.

I think Baker and Wayne also wrote about their life on the road with the Clashgreat memories. Glasgow Apollo was the highlight for me, there was so much going on it was hard to keep up, Mick falling over the camera man on stage was crazy, I liked how that was edited into the movie. "Get off the Fucking Stage" .

This was supposed to be the last Gig at the Apollo so the bouncers were keen to make their mark, Steve English tried to 'keep the peace' but he couldn't stop the carnage...ironically there were quite a few more gigs at the Apollo after this one...

Cheers, Howard

The scene: the cobbled street down the side of the Glasgow Apollo. Round about midnight.

The dramatis personae: The Clash, fifty to sixty Clash fans, Clash drivers and security guys, an indeterminate number of members of the Glasgow constabulary.
