Shot down in flames
TO THE anonymous person who pointed out certain similarities between the special 'White Man In Hammersmith Palais' Clash label and the style, so cleverly spotted, of the famous Pop Artist Roy Lichtenstein (just though I'd show you the correct way to spell his surname) from 'Jaws' page 8, and to give the fan something in July 1st edition.
If the person who wrote the piece had only asked someone who knew, then he or she would have been told that the Clash label is an original Lichenstein design (smoke and all) adapted by "the artist" then altered slightly to make the image a lot more colourfull (sicóEd.) more to look at than the standard record company label.
"The artist" was proud of this fact and was in no way trying to grab undue credit. Neither had "the artist" ever set eyes upon the Magnum label in his lift, the reggae similarity being sheer, if not inappropriate, coincidence.
"The artist", as most artists have done, does go to art school, but what has art school got to do with the Clash's music.
I have enclosed a photocopy of the correct original, which is a study for a Time magazine cover. It was done in pencil, measures 16 x 12 inches and was drawn in 1968. When giving references you should at least try and get them right, or not bother at all. Nie Egan, 7 Abbots Park, London Road, St. Albans, Herts.

'White Man in Hammersmith Palais' by the Clash was released 41 years ago this week! My rather battered copy bought back then from The Beat Goes On in Regent Street, Cambridge, and a photo I came across (not mine) including a poster for the gig that inspired it. #punk #1978
