[extract] In Sheffield, local politicians framed the Sex Pistols as being purveyors of obscenity. Councillor Francis Butler, the former leader of the Liberal Party in the city, told the press that ‘punk rock is one of the most obscene performances that can be put on a stage'. In response, Sam Mason, the manager of the City Hall, announced the cancellation of the show. Councillor Sidney Dyson justified the move by saying that ‘we are not having obscenity, vulgarity, and deprivation in our Hall'.
