El Reggae de Joe Strummer
Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros
At the Sun Theatre, 5 Nov 99 by Joe McGaha (Indyrock)

Last Friday, I went to see the performance of Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros at the Sun Theater in Anaheim, California, USA. I've been a fan of the Clash for 15 or 20 years, but I had the chance to see them in concert, so to see Joe Strummer was truly a dream come true. The Sun Theater is a fairly new theater. They opened the doors for the first time a couple of months ago, and since then, they have had performances by several great artists like Yes, Squeeze, and now Joe Strummer. The show carried a feeling of something very new, full of action, not an artist who has been playing for more than 20 years. I play many well-known songs (to the great public applause) like "London Calling", "Rock The Casbah", and "Straight to Hell", besides the songs of their new LP. There was a very exciting atmosphere, and at least three people from the audience took the stage, until the guards kicked them out of the theater. Something quite typical of the early days of Punk, but a bit surprising when you consider that these fans have been 30 to 40 years, or even more. There was a mixture of young people, and older people, all enjoying the music that after 20 years, still carries the same strength. Joe Strummer plays and sings with equal passion when he was 20 years old, and maybe he feels more comfortable now on the stage he felt then. Their new band, The Mescaleros, plays very well, and it shows that they have a great love for the music they are playing. Overall, the performance was tremendous, and to all who have an opportunity to see it, I recommend it. Long live Joe Strummer!
